    Taylor Mansfield Article

    Sometimes little sister knows best.

A sibling’s advice led Taylor Mansfield home to Decorah, where he has joined the Luther College wrestling team. Mansfield has played football at Iowa State, where he played in 11 games last season and started two at defensive end.
Mansfield had plenty of athletic options coming out of high school. He won state titles in wrestling and the shot put during his senior year, but playing Division I football was a boyhood dream.

Mansfield, who had the highest grade-point average on the Cyclone football team in 2009 and was twice named first-team academic all-Big 12, often thought about showing up at the Iowa State wrestling room and asking if he could step in as a practice partner, but never did.

With this being his last semester of athletic eligibility, Mansfield pondered transferring schools and getting out his headgear for one more run.

“It depended upon the day. Sometimes I would be gung ho about it, and other days I would feel like I’d earned a break,” Mansfield said.

He’d decided on taking a break until his sister, Kate, a member of the women’s rowing team at Wisconsin, told him to reconsider.

“She told me, ‘You know you’ll regret it,’” Mansfield said.

Mansfield took the plunge, and shortly after joining the team found himself wrestling at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals in Cedar Falls.

Wasn't his eligibility spent? I believe with the GPA comment that he probably completed school, and is now at Luther as a wrestler. Could be worng. I don't know if they have grad programs at Luther or not.

In reading the article, which you apparently have not, his football eligiblity is done, he has transfer to Luther for the remaining part of the year. His credits at Luther will transfer back to ISU, which will give him an ISU degree....Got it?.

How do you figure? He is using the most of his ability and options to enjoy 2 more months of athletics. I'm glad he did it. It's very similar to what Kyle Slifka is doing. Except Taylor will get the opportunity to be an All-American while Slifka is a workout partner.

Taylor is trying to go to Med School next year, so he really just had a semester to burn.

The NCAA will allow one year of eligibility past another sport to play a different sport.

Few years ago Steve Mocco used up his eligibility as a wrestler at Okla State. Then he ended up be a back-up DT on the football team for the following year.

Congrats to Mansfield... go win a title for Norse

Should be an interesting match tonight. They take on my Kohawks at 7 p.m. Coe currently has the fifth-ranked Heavyweight in the nation for Division III.

"We embrace that challenge and what it presents to us. I’m going to approach all 12 games this way: We’re going to win them all. If we prepare and then go out and execute, we’re going to win all 12. Now how many are we going to end up with at the end of the year? I don’t know, and you’re right, I won’t put a number on it."- Paul Rhoads on having the toughest schedule in the Big 12
