    2/4/11 TX/Southeast Winter Storm

Well, I've been on the north side of Dallas this week for work. We got around an inch of sleet/snow Tuesday morning which shut down the whole metro area. It's been bitterly cold (for this area) since then, and the roads have stayed pretty icy. Snow day #2 came on Wednesday, with little change in conditions.

Yesterday, we went to work, but made the decision to call it off as it became obvious that working outside in the still-icy conditions was not worth the risk. Snow day #2.5

Last night it started snowing again. 1-3 inches of snow was forecast. As of now, about 5 inches has fallen and it is snow day #3.5 of the week and I'm under a winter storm warning. Might get another inch or so before the last of the snow moves out. Quite the storm in this area!

I know that other areas of Texas and the southeast are getting major amounts of snow/ice as well. Any Cyclone reports out there? Anyone else sitting at home because of the weather today?

One of my friends from high school now lives in Austin and schools/work all shut down with this on the ground as of last night:

I know that 5 inches is a lot in your neck of the woods, but until I get through the 27 inch drift that encompasses my front walk, I can only shake my head.

I'm at A&M and we are closed today due to a thin ice layer (with some snow on top) on the roads. I'll upload a picture in a bit.

Ah, dangitt. I forgot to power-down the flux-capacitor last night. Sorry, won't happen again.

It's kind of the like the first snow of the season back in Iowa. Yeah, it's just some snow, nothing major. But not everyone is used to driving in snow again and more people than usual get into trouble on the roads. It's like that down here, except 5x worse so everything just gets shut down instead and they recommend no travel at all.

I will say that many of the streets/highways here have been VERY icy, since the sleet we had Tuesday partially melted and then refroze into a sheet of ice and hasn't melted since. And there are very, very few plow/salt/sand trucks around here to clear anything off. That's the main problem.

    Re: 2/4/11 TX/Southeast Winter Storm

The streets are very, very icy, and its the slick ice, not the compacted snow type ice where you can get some traction. The snow might actually help that a little bit.

No traffic though on the way to work this morning...

I can vouch for that. Its snow day 4 for me and they still haven't plowed here. It gets ******* old. In Iowa, this would have been plowed the first day. Is it really that hard to put a piece of sheet metal on the front of city trucks to move snow?

Edit: and for the record, we got 20 inches.

Work was out until noon. I slept in and woke up to a text that it's closed all day today. Since then, I've been watching the Houston TranStar live feed of people trying (and failing) to drive through the snow with the Benny Hill theme on a continuous loop.

    Re: 2/4/11 TX/Southeast Winter Storm

I live in Plano (just north of Dallas) and commute over 30 miles each day to east Dallas (Mesquite area).

I made it just fine to work each day. It was easy for an Iowa native. In fact, my commute was nearly quicker than usual due to all the dumb a$$es not being out on the road. I actually enjoyed the drives.

Earlier in the week I was callng the people that didn't make it in to work "ice wussies" and today I'm calling those that didn't show up "snow wussies."

Reporting here from Mission, TX which is on the border with Mexico and next to McAllen. Had about an 1/8 inch of ice last night. Temps got down to 25 degrees, no problem. Not even a hint of snow this winter. Temperatures have been unseasonably warm (80-90 degrees very common since Dec 1). Lots of Winter Texans here from Iowa. The manager of our RV Village is a hok of all things! But to make up for him, I have a neighbor 4 spots from me who is an ISU EE grad, 1971. His Iowa home is in Ankeny over by Saylorville Lake, only about 5 miles from our Iowa home.
