    Campustown Renovation

So I was just looking at the daily's website and saw that the city of ames had hired a company called LANE4 to "revitalize" campustown? Now, I admit I don't know much about their plans, but I did see a picture of the proposed renovations:

Now it might just be me, but that looks like they are trying to take campustown and make it oldpeopleville. Has the city of Ames just started pretending like the students don't even exist?

Anyone know anything more about the plans?

    Re: Campustown Renovation

wow, id heard some buzz about it, but thought it was just about the old plans thatd just been the block between welch\hayward and lincoln way\chamberlain.. (which could really use some improvement)

Id be interested to know more here.. has potential to be good, also potential to suck if it meant any bars would have to pay a lot more to rent new buildings.

I wish they would renovate campus town but this has been going on for years. But that drawing is pretty lame.

    Re: Campustown Renovation

How do you get the impression that these plans are lame? They look rather vague to me. The hotel is probably a bad idea, but a mini grocery store would be great for the area. I know there will be a great majority of people who will not like the grocery store on Lincoln way because that is a place for a bar to be, but it is a great location for business and for people to venture in to campus town. Also, by kind of looking at the plans, it seems like they want combine buildings and make them bigger, but plans always change depending on who wants to invest in businesses in campus town and how they want to do that.

    Re: Campustown Renovation

Found this on the daily site too:

Letter: Student liaison explains Campustown redevelopment project - Iowa State Daily: Opinion - Letter: Student liaison explains Campustown redevelopment project: Opinion

While it is true that some existing businesses in Campustown may not remain in the Welch Avenue area, it is the goal of the project's leaders the city of Ames and Iowa State to create a more diverse entertainment life in Campustown that will attract a broader cross section of our residents, while still retaining some of the staple establishments of the Welch Avenue scene.

To me, that reads as "We are going to change it to how we want it, and we don't give a **** about the students."

    Re: Campustown Renovation

If i could do anything with that welch\hayward\chamberlain block, itd be cool to see it turned into an ames-sized power and light district. restaurants, bars, outdoor concert area, outdoor heating.

I do like seeing parking put into the equation... parking is very deficient in campustown.

They want to get Ames residents and students under 21 into the Campustown area.

agreed. 'more diverse cross section'= we want this area, the area right next to the university, to be for more than just college students, even though ames already has an area that is more 'townie' in the downtown district.

Or it can mean we are going to make Campustown in to more then just bar after after bar. Adding businesses with a more restaurant oriented focus I believe is needed as well as general shopping needs such as clothing stores.

From everything I have read regarding this project, they want it to be more than liquor store with some food. Their idea is to have something bigger than a convenient store, but smaller than a full grocery store a place where if you forget something to make dinner, you could find it there. It would probably have a deli, a place to get frozen meats as well as a larger array of boxed foods.

Its pretty common for colleges to have an area thats just bar after bar. Its not like restaurants have been forbidden from locating in campustown. We've had a lot leave that area.

Is it going to be cheaper than hy-vee? If not, its going to be passed over by a lot the nearby students without much money. If so, is it going to be able to pay its rent in that prime real estate?

True, but there are other options in those areas as well. I will not dispute that college towns have an above average number of bars, but I would like to see a wider range of businesses in campustown that are not a bar first everything else second.
