    Visiting Des Moines

Here's the deal, for my wife's birthday a few weeks back I got her tickets to go see Chicago at the Des Moines Civic Center. Since I don't get down to Des Moines a lot, I am looking for suggestions on a nice hotel downtown.

She also has it in her head that she wants sushi for dinner that night, so if anyone has suggestions on that as well, they would be welcome. If there's not really a good place for that downtown, feel free to throw out some other options. I would say we're looking for a fun restaurant, more than a fancy one.

Miyabi 9 in the east village for sushi.

    Re: Visiting Des Moines

Miyabi 9 is great sushi, and it's in the East Village which is just across the Des Moines River from downtown.

If you're looking for a fun restaurant, any of the Full Court Press bars have interesting menus as well as being very fun bars. These include:
El Bait Shop (Beer bar. Menu is semi-Mexican, but good burgers and wings)
High Life Lounge (comfort food and cheap beer)
Fong's Pizza (crazy *** pizza, interesting mix drinks and good beer selection)
Royal Mile (British bar, lots of British/Irish beers and a English inspired menu)
The Red Monk (upstairs of Royal Mile. Belgian beers)
    Sbrocco (wine bar, upscale menu)
Mullet's (Southern seafood menu, interesting joint, south of the Raccoon River)
Hessen Haus (German food, German beer)

    All are essentially downtown.

In 1984, I was hospitalized for approaching perfection.

    Re: Visiting Des Moines

You have a few options for nice downtown hotels, here's a couple of my recommendations:

#1 The Renaissance Savory Hotel is the closest hotel (less than a block away from the Civic Center). Also, it is just two blocks away from Court District with has more than enough nightlife to keep you occupied.

Second choice (and maybe 1st...since it just opened, I can't give a fist-hand recommendation) is the Hyatt Place. It would be your second closest hotel to the Civic Center.

Sushi -- approx 4 blocks to the east of these two hotels is Myiabi 9. I'm not a sushi expert, but I hear great things about Chef Myiabi (who's previous venue prior to Des Moines was in Boston).

We like Sakari on Ingersoll. Have also heard good reviews on Myobi 9 in the East Village

All excellent suggestions. All of these are unique to Des Moines and several of them are anti-fancy.

Personally, I'd recommend Fong's for dinner and High Life/El Bait Shop (they are connected) for drinks afterwards.

Is that the place just east of Big Tomato? I work in that neighborhood and have been meaning to hit it for lunch.

    Myobi 9 is fantastic.

As far as hotel there is an Embassy Suites right next to the Civic Center. Pretty standard Embassy Suites, but it's a nice hotel.

    Re: Visiting Des Moines

My bad. Yes, Embassy Suites would be a good option too. Just across the DM River from the Civic Center and it would put you closer to the East Village (where Myiabi is located...which begs the question after reading this thread -- how many ways can you spell Myiabi?

Don't stay downtown unless you want to get mugged and/or raped.

    That's for CCGuy

On a serious note, the new Hyatt PLace looks nice from the outside and is in a good location.

You should stay in West Des Moines. Lots better options, and a lot safer.
