    BONUS: Tyrus McGee quick hits

Here are some bonus notes on Tyrus McGee that I couldn’t fit into the feature story that is now on the front page.

    - I found this Fred Hoiberg quote interesting.

“He reminds me some of Ron Bayless, who I played with. He has that ability to shoot the ball, defend the dribble and just be a jack of all trades player.”

    - McGee told me that he’s going to try to attend Iowa State’s game at Kansas on Feb. 12. I asked him what he thought about Iowa State’s string of close losses this season. Here’s his response.

“That makes me a lot more motivated. I know that next year, we’ll have all of those transfers coming in.”

I would be very ok if the kid had Bayless' game. Very solid point guard.

I just wish his assist stats weren't so thin. Of course, next year he'll have more targets to pass to.

Definitely an understandable concern. It appears to me that he NEEDS to be a scorer for his team, though, and therefore doesn't distribute the ball as much as he possibly could.

Ron was a wonderful player. He and JT went off against Kentucky. Came up short but it was cool.

Great game and real high scoring game. I still wish Johnny would have popped that little weasel Pitino after the game.

    That was a GREAT game.

This is kind of where I am at.

    assists work two ways.
1.) excellent vision and passing ability
2.) teammates who are highly capable scorers

My guess is that he is the best player on the team, and he needs to score. That shouldn't be an issue next year. That said, I cannot vouch for his vision, passing, ball handling, floor leadership, etc. BUT. If Hoiberg has a man-crush on him... I guess I do too!

Who else was recruiting this kid? I'm looking forward to seeing him in a cyclone uniform.

Re: BONUS: Tyrus McGee quick hits

Ron Bayless was an absolute monster defender; he always guarded the opponent's best scorer and completely shut him down most of the time. If McGee has that kind of defensive ability, I don't care if can't score, shutting down an opponent's best offensive weapon is equivalent to scoring 18-25 points a game IMO.

I can't think of a better ISU defender than Ron in my time as a fan. He was a great FT shooter as well.

Agree with everything you said. My only question is that if McGee shuts down the opponents best player, who is that going to leave for Chris Allen to shut down? He has already been the shut down defender on a final four team!

Nice problem to have if McGee lives up to the hype.
