Feature: Hoiberg on Tyrus McGee, future of PG position at ISU

Here's a story that I've been working on for a couple of days now. It features Tyrus McGee's sophomore season successes and the future of the point guard position in Ames. I spoke with Coach Hoiberg about all of this earlier today, where he gave me a lot of insight on the situation. I hope you enjoy it.

I'm crossing my fingers that he is the answer for PG.

So what you're saying is we won't have the Big XII leader in assists on our roster next year.

Awesome! I can't wait for him to be on campus. The way Freddy talks him up makes me all the more excited. Man the Capital city league is going to be fun to watch this summer. Thanks for the update Chris.

The more I hear, the more I think that we won't have a true PG next year and I'm fine with that. We could have 3-4 guards capable of handling the ball in at any given time, which could make it incredibly tough to play defense against us, especially when we push it and press.

That thread the other day about tempering expectations for next year wanted me to pull my hair out...fact is, I'd bet Fred has very high expectations for next and we all should to. Not only are we set for next year but we're set for the year after and beyond. Fred will have ISU becoming a major player in this conference starting year two. Pretty damn impressive.

Tempering expectations makes it more fun for fans, I think. I was enjoying the heck out of this year until right after the Baylor game when I started to think we had a chance at the NIT or even a slight chance at the NCAA. Now, I am down. Nothing wrong with being excited, but never expect anything....fast way to get disappointed (see last year's basketball team).

Reading the Mike Nurse article, it made me remember that during that year, I never expected us to win. Every, single win that year was a gift and I appreciated them. Even late in the year when I knew we were good, I still thought at some point things would catch up to us. It made that season a hell of a lot more fun than if I had expected them to win.

I am constantly amazed by CFH ... amazed in his ability to be honest.

No BS, no spinning, no buzzwords, no hype, and no political correctness crapola. He just tells it like it is.

You know, this man's talent is being wasted on being a coach. Someone convince this guy to run for Governor next time with an eye on the White House. Seriously.

Great article Chris! Thanks for pulling us Fanatics off of the ledge. We all need to look at the big picture of the program that Coach Hoiberg is building. Brighter days are ahead for Cyclone basketball. Go Cyclones!!!

Agree jsb. I'm excited but not going to get overpsyched and set up for a possible dissappointment. After the last 5 years the NIT looks good, and if we do better I'll be really pumped. I do expect us to have a decent shot at the NCAA next year, but I'm not forgetting that we might have as many as 5 new starters (which could be a good thing). We'll have a lot of talent, but could have a situation where all of our starters are seeing their first Big 12 action.
