    Recruiting Limits - REALLY????

Has anyone noticed the class that UCF is putting together.....a very talented class...but the real question is what the H@&# are they doin down there? The NCAA has implemented the rules that state you can have 25 for each class max with a max signing of 28 while eligibility is determined.

UCF currently has 34 verbals....what happens to the unlucky 9 that may not have schollies?

    Re: Recruiting Limits - REALLY????

It is pretty sad that so many schools can oversign year after year and not renew a kid's scholarship because they do not produce enough, just to make room.

Here is a list of schools from major conferences

    Or - kids transfer
Or - they don't make grades
    Or - coaching change

I don't think ISU has "not renewed a kid's scholarship" and they are the top of the heap in the Big XII. There are even a few walkon's that earned scholly's.

It would appear that ISU is taking a chance on kids that, apparently, aren't making it to campus. I know there have been a few threads here about JUCO's, who originally signed with ISU, that are know headed to another school.

It has happened before. There aren't a lot, but there have been a few.

I never said that there are not other reasons for oversigning, but the example of not renewing a scholarship happen all the time.

Also if you look, despite the fact that the B10 has new coaches, kids not making grades, and transfers, there is not a single team in the B10 that has an average over 25. Despite this, they are somehow able to have 85 scholarship players every year. Why? They have rules in place and they actually enforce them to stop this from happening.

I think you're being naive when you say ISU doesn't renew scholarships. Awarding a scholarship to a walk on that's been in the program doesn't count against the 25/year limit.

I thought that the 28 limit was just an SEC Rule due to Houston Nutt. I don't think the ncaa had adopted it yet, maybe I'm wrong.

I think he is naive too. It happens even at ISU. I do think you are wrong though with the awarding scholars to walk-ons. I believe it does count against your yearly total which is one of the reasons that scholars are normally awarded in the fall. At that point there has been a player or two or more that has not qualified or has decided to transfer or something.

I might be wrong, but I remember hearing somewhere that they do count.

It's pretty obvious that we "nudged" Hamlin and Johnson out. It happens. Our staff has said they will be truthful with the players, and tell them if they aren't cutting it, or if they'll never really produce here. I don't think we force them out, but a polite tap. I think the players realize it anyway.

    Re: Recruiting Limits - REALLY????

    I do find it interesting

    1) it seems like the better a team does on a consistent basis the smaller the average class.
    2) The only two years that ISU was at 25 was during the Chizik years. Both Mac and PR were over every year.
    3) ISU is third in the nation for number of recruits signed a year, but the SEC make up 6 of the top 8 schools in this category.
    4) #1 and #3 observations are almost counterintuitive. The two coaches at ISU that have had any success were always "over recruiting". The best football conference in the nation leads the nation in over recruiting. Yet the most successful school normally don't over recruit. I think this shows that the middle level school can't compete for the top recruits and pull in more recruits in effort to find some missed gems. This translates to better than normal (for that school) success.

    Re: Recruiting Limits - REALLY????

Thats because we do sign and place with players that are lightly recruited. That way if they break out at a JUCO, we already have our foot in the door. It rarely works, but the risk is none. This last year we had Dentrell Pate and Jevoury Weddenberg(?) that no one had heard of sign with us on NSD.

Yep, just an SEC rule currently. I'd like to see it adopted by the NCAA and also the 85 scholarship limit dropped to 80.

No, awarding walk-ons scholarships only counts against the 25 if the player was given the scholarship in his first two years. If the player is a RS Soph or above, it does not count against the 25 (only the 85). So, last fall, Woody's scholarship would have counted against the 25, but Matt Morton's and Preston Kaufman's wouldn't have. Not sure whether Woody's scholarship had to count against the class of 2010 or the class of 2009 though.
