    Last second shot?

I didnt get to see the game but heard we had the ball at the end with a chance to win and couldnt even get a shot off again! What happened this time? What is it were doing that we cant get a shot off at all in at least 3 games this season? What needs to change?

Not throwing the ball into the back court.

    Re: Last second shot?

Also running a shot clock down to 6.3 seconds, then calling a timeout. I would think if they did that at 10 seconds, it might have helped set up a play a little more.

You've probably found a replay somewhere by now, but they inexplicably ran the clock down and finally called TO with 6 seconds left. After the TO, Jake got the ball to DG, who promptly dribbled into a double team approximately four feet beyond the three point line and threw a wild pass to someone around the free throw line (I think it was Jake). At that point the shot clock expired, and with .4 left Okie's inbounder threw it out of bounds at the opposite end of the floor, so ISU had yet another shot to pull the game out. Ejim had a decent tip in opportunity on a designed out of bounds play but it missed. The rest is history.

    Re: Last second shot?

I have no idea what they were thinking. They could have called a timeout and reset.

    Re: Last second shot?

I saw that Lutz was doing most of the talking in the huddle. He looks to be in charge at the end. Our problem is DG will be double teamed after the last timeout. Why not make SC the point guard for the last play? He has great floor vision to pass or shoot.

The Problem is the Last 2-3 Minutes

Coach Hoiberg needs to change his approach at the end of games. Using a 1-4 offense with Garrett trying to break down defenses doesn't work! It didn't work with Coach McDermott and nothing has changed. That isn't meant to be a criticism of Diante- but just not a strength of his. Diante is decent at getting to the bucket in our normal offense, but he doesn't have the quickness and there is too much help defense when we go to a 1-4.

The solution, just run the normal offense that allowed us to create the 4-6 point leads we got against OSU & OU. Just run some clock off within the offense and if a guy gets a GREAT shot with 20 seconds left on the clock then take it.

    Re: Last second shot?

You can't inbound the ball in the back court with six seconds left. They have to have a better plan than forcing the ball to Garrett like he's the only one who can make a play. No offense to Diante but how many times has the clear out for Diante at the end of the game actually worked? Also he needs to get a shot off there, he knows how much time is left, he can't pass the ball. If nothing else he needs to just pull up for a deep three and hope we get a tip, letting the shot clock expire in that situation is embarrassing.

Garrett failed in the clutch, again. Drove into a double team and didnt pass the ball until the shot clock expired.

    Re: Last second shot?

Same thing happened to Okie State yesterday. They gave the ball to Keithen Paige and he was stuffed. Game over. You better have Plan B to take a shot at the end.

Yesterday it looked like we did not want to take the timeout with six seconds left but CFH could see we were in trouble and called it. The problem is we have JVB or Ejim making the pick and the other team expects it. Maybe Jake should set the pick. You know, fool the other team with some innovation instead of running the vanilla play.

    Re: Last second shot?

This **** needs to be addressed NOW. You'd think this would be a fairly minor thing, but it has now lost us three conference games.

    Re: Last second shot?

This one wasn't really a fault of the set. You just can't pass it into the back court, heading towards the opponents hoop, with 6 seconds and expect to get a reasonable shot up.

Everyone and their dog knows by now that our offense in the last few minutes (and especially last few seconds) begins and ends with DG. I don't hold him responsible for not being able to beat a defense specifically designed to stop him on one play.

We need to mix it up and have Jake or Scottie get the ball. While they might not be as effective as DG in that situation, I think it would unbalance the defense and at least give them an opportunity at an open shot (or a pass for an open shot).

    Re: Last second shot?

The play throwing the ball across half court was just stupid. Call a timeout and reset if there was no other option. Not even getting a shot off with 6 seconds left is just careless. Glad they actually ran a tip-in play with .4 seconds because too many times under the hoop we've done the same thing throwing the ball clear out past the 3 point line instead of trying to find something quick near the hoop, that is frustrating as well.

I think this coaching staff is going through some growing pains right now too. Too many games lately where we have not executed in the last minute or so in winnable games with this one and the OSU game the worst 2 allowing good looks for game tying 3 pointers. We've started out games in big holes too which is never easy to climb out of and maintain a lead because you use so much energy playing catchup. I have faith they staff will make adjustments and learn from their mistakes but I think Fred's coaching inexperience is showing a little lately and he's learning on the job just like the team has had to learn a new system in short time. The coaches huddle for every time out before they talk to the players is just an example of the learning going on I think as if you watch other teams they almost immediately get right into coaching their players while our coaches huddle up and talk for a minute while the players sit waiting for them.

I agree 100%. I'm sick of watching this at the end of close games. It's happened his whole career and it keeps happening.

This. CFH saw the not working so he called a TO from the bench.
