Cool How to learn to play drums?

I have a 10-yr-old who wants to learn to play drums. Any drummers on here have advice on how to get started? Should I find him somewhere to take lessons?

    Thanks!

Re: How to learn to play drums?

I was going to suggest that you get loaded and listen to a lot of Who records.

Then I saw you were talking about your 10 year old.

I'd still recommend the Who records.

Re: How to learn to play drums?

All of the dudes I know that play drums started with piano. But I only know 5 or 6. I think any instrument would help with time and such.

The alcohol could still be helpful (for james, not the kid).

If you want your kid to grow into a whiny, desperate loser that no one likes, I know just the person to ask!

EDIT: I meant by learning from this person, not that drum beaters are all losers.

Re: How to learn to play drums?

If he wants to be in a band, learn drums. Everyone remotely interested in starting a band can play and probably owns a guitar or bass. Drummers are always the hardest thing to find.

If you're talking band, they want you to start with piano first. Otherwise check with Rieman's or some other place that gives private lessons.

Re: How to learn to play drums?

Have him take 2 years of piano before hand. Trust me, it will help with the coordination. At my school, if you wanted to be a drummer, it was required to take 2 years of piano before. He might hate it, like me, but it is worth it in the long run.

Also, is he looking to play the snare drum, drum set, or all percussion? Whatever it is, have him start taking lessons, along with piano lessons. He should be absolutely perfect at all the basic rudiments before playing anything on the drum set, as well as the coordination built up through piano.

Does he want to be in the school band or does he wanna rock and roll? Totally different styles of drumming.

I probably could make a call to Joey Jordison for you. And by the way, he played in the school band. Guess that gig worked out for him pretty good, huh?

I never said you couldn't do both. I just said they were different styles.

    Different equipment for sure.

I don't know about perfecting, but this going down the right route. Learn how to get fairly detailed on the snare before trying to add other drums and your feet.

Yeah, I guess "perfection" might take a tad too long. I guess what I should have said was, "Learn to do the basic rudiments and be able to play them comfortably without stumbling through them, before adding more drums and your feet."
