    261 MPG VW Coming Soon

What with gasoline prices at the pump well past $3 a gallon - and edging ever higher - drivers understandably are pining for the day when technology will come to their rescue.

If you're willing to wait a couple of years, though, Volkswagen may have what you're waiting for.

At an auto show in Qatar this week, Volkswagen showed off a proof-of-concept car that will get 261 miles to the gallon. The XL1, a two cylinder, two-seater made from carbon fiber, is expected to go into production sometime in the next two years. If the auto's fuel efficiency lives up to the advance billing, VW likely will be able to say it makes the world's most economical car.

While very cool, there's more to getting a "green" car USA-legal than fuel economy (not saying that's your argument, just saying let's not get too excited yet). Our EPA puts a lot of emphasis on emissions and I believe that those regulations have kept some very efficient European vehicles off our streets.

Not to mention the safety requirements that it likely couldn't pass to be legal in the US.

I would think if a Smart car can pass just about anything could. Every time I see one of those stop at a light I expect to see about 20 clowns pour out of it.

Yeah, but usually there is only one clown in it...

The current Smart makes no sense in the U.S. They are all over Europe but they usually have diesels that get great mpg and they are great for the limited parking. The mpg on the american version is embarrassing for it's size.

At the end of that article there is another link to a more complete press release. It says it's a diesel hybrid - a little 1.0 liter, two cylinder TDI (48 hp) mated with an electric motor (27 hp) and a 7 speed dual clutch transmission. The 2 liter TDI in the current Jetta and Golf is able to meet emissions requirements partly due to its small size, so hopefully this would fit in as well.

0 - 62 mph in 11.9 seconds, top speed of 100 mph. Sounds like a great commuter car.

You can spend a lot of time and money picking out the perfect floral bouquet for your date ... but you're probably better off checking if you have bad breath and taking the porn out of the glove compartment.

The moral: you gain more by not being stupid, than you do by being smart. Smart gets neutralized by other smart people. Stupid does not.

I'm pretty sure I get behind one of these on the on ramp just about every other day on my commute.

I dislike it even more when I get stuck behind the guy with the turbocharged 4L Buick who should be able to do 0-60 in about 6 seconds, but takes 30.

Well that's because the median age of someone driving a Buick is close to 112.

So why does his car have a very large turbocharged engine? That never made sense to me.
