Mtn. West to give death blow to WAC?

Word is that the MWC may invite Utah St. and San Jose St. in order to get to 12 teams for a conference championship. This adds 2 more mouths to feed for revenue, but apparently Comcast (who runs the Mtn.) wants to keep a Utah school on the network because a big chunk of advertising comes from there right now because of Utah and BYU.

Why San Jose St.? TV population. No other reason.

Why 12 teams? Revenue from a championship game would help keep the network afloat with the loss of Utah, TCU, and BYU.

This would leave Idaho, New Mexico St., and La Tech as the only remaining remembers in addition to Texas St., UT-San Antonio, and at least 3 other schools to try to get up to 8 for football.

Stinks to be in Idaho, New Mexico St., or La Tech's position...

Re: Mtn. West to give death blow to WAC?

In essence, the MWC is becoming the WAC. They lost all their arguments for being a BCS league, so they're just trying to be a bigger, yet obviously nowhere close to AQ, league.

Re: Mtn. West to give death blow to WAC?

Just my opinion, but SMU and Houston are stupid if they are not interested in the MWC. With Boise, Fresno, Nevada and AF, the league is clearly going to be the best non-BCS league out there.

LA Tech is really getting screwed here. They really need to be in CUSA, but that league has 12 teams already. The only way they get in is if CUSA expands past 12 or if the Big East invites someone like Houston to join. For the WAC, I'm not sure what they do...try to get some 1AA teams to move up like Montana and Idaho St? Invite some Sunbelt teams like UL-L or UL-M or Troy...or maybe Danny Mac's North Texas program gets the call up? I guess at least conference teams don't have to spring for flights to Hawaii all the time.

Re: Mtn. West to give death blow to WAC?

Options for the WAC to expand are limited. One article has noted:

Multiple sources, one of which attended Friday's meeting, told the Express-News recently the list of football candidates includes, but is not necessarily limited to, Louisiana-Lafayette, Lamar, Sam Houston State, California-Davis, Portland State and Cal Poly.
The sources also said the WAC could make fresh runs at Montana and North Texas, both of which turned down invitations last November. If Montana were to be approached again, one of the sources said, Montana State would likely be considered as well.

Sounds like a fun conference: Idaho, New Mexico St., Texas St., UT-San Antonio, La Tech, Lamar, Portland St., Cal Poly

Even more disparity between the Have's and the Have-Not's in college football.

I agree, I think they're just trying to keep their spot as the "toughest non AQ conference". FWIW they still have Boise who, even with the changes will still play a stronger schedule than they did before. Im just curious which program (if any) will step up and be the next BCS darling. The last few years there have been 2 non AQ's fighting for BCS births, with Utah and TCU gone, and the WAC not having a contender, Boise is the last one standing. Really, I think these moves are going to make it tougher for the non AQ's to qualify, that just means more money for the big boys. This makes the current format of 10 BCS teams much weaker as well, it's likely we'll see a 3 or 4 loss team in the BCS most years now, and I don't mean a conference champ like this year. We'll see teams like Illinois' Rose Bowl team undeservedly qualify.

The Big East will invite Central Florida next IMO, La Tech was a former CUSA member. Hopefully they left on good terms.

BYU is no longer in the MWC? I must have missed that one.

They went Independent. I think they will be in the Big 12 within 5 years, along with Notre Dame if this Texas TV deal works out and they get over their "anti-conference out of pride" thing.

Gone independent in football, trying to be the Mormon Notre Dame.

Joined the WCAC (I think) for other sports.

BYU decided to independent. They want to be Notre Dame Jr. They already have HD TV studios paid for to promote the LDS agenda, so in essence they've already invested a big chunk of money. They just need to get decent scheduling and remain a good football team over time (which they weren't this year...)

It's not just 'anti-conference out of pride'. They have a great thing going as an independent. Also, there's the 'anti-Big Ten out of spite'. They wanted to join, but the Big Ten just looked the other way. Now the Big Ten sees the money in having ND, and wants to get them back.

Re: Mtn. West to give death blow to WAC?

Idaho is in the worst situation in all this.

I'm guessing the Sun Belt may take NM State and definitely La Tech. Sun Belt has 9 football teams. The could now have NMState, LATech, UTSA and Texas State to fill 3 spots.

CUSA has 12 teams already, guessing they would take both or none. As someone else said at some point Central Florida could get nabbed by the Big East or eve the Big 12, then they'd need a team to stay at 12.

Idaho has absolutely nothing. Idaho's only options at this point are hoping to hang onto NM State and LA Tech (long shot) talk Montana and Montana State into going D1 when Montana already said no... that still leaves them at 5 teams... hope the two texas schools both still come up to FBS... now we're at 7... and then get one more team out of somwhere to move up. The other options are FCS or Independent. If I had to guess I'd say FCS or Independent are more likely than all those other factors happening. Independent for Idaho would likely mean a whole lot of traveling. FCS might be their best move since there are other good FCS teams in the region.
