    Cheating and Athletics

If athletics teaches character why do coaches allow cheating?

Packer defender just trapped the ball and it would have saved everyone two minutes if he would have avoided the challenge and said I trapped it.

    Or is athletics teaching characters?

I think you are confusing athletics and professional sports.

It's the ref's call, not the players. Even if the Packer admitted to trapping it, the official isn't going to change his call.

Do you really expect the player to say he trapped it? Do you really consider this some terrible form of cheating? Geesh.

I thought this was gonna be something again about Cam Newton....which would have made more sense.

    Really???

Who knows - this could be a really important play in the game. Say Chicago needs a challenge at the end and they don't have one.

Do you expect a baseball player to say they are out when called safe? A basketball player to say he fouled someone when one is not called? A football player to call a hold when one is not called?

When you come up and act like you make a play when you really didn't and show confidence sometimes it is called. We did this all the time turning double plays in baseball.

Professional sports is a business. Period. No need for anyone to go on a moral high horse.

    From the comments,

    • Alex: I touched it.
      Coach: No you didn't.
Alex: Our team's favored by 8.5. I placed fifty bucks on the other guys to beat the spread. They're losing by 9. Come on coach. It's got a 2.0 multiplier! I'm close to making a hundred bucks and I'm throwing a party tonight and really want a ****ton of booze for it. It'll be lameass if I don't make some cash to throw down on a couple of handles of Jack. Come on coach. Please?
      Coach: ...okay. Alex! Good call.
Gambling, cursing, and alcohol. Pass it on.

Armando Galarraga's near-perfect game - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The ump even admitted he was wrong after the game was over. Once the call is made, you can't go back and change it outside of what the rules allow for.

Yup. And its part of the game. The refs are going to get calls wrong that hurt you too, it evens out.

    Re: Cheating and Athletics

why didn't you get all over JVB after he made that the 3 pointer to win, when it was clear it should not of counted? Like he said after the game, its the payers job to play the game, and the refs job to officiate it.

Players are taught to play til the whistle

And sometimes they really do think they made the play. Its the way the game works

    thats a good point

but i think the OP has a pretty good point too. there is so much cheating and dishonesty its ridiculous. That isn't going to change.

I don't agree with whoever said, "its the players job to convince the ref he made the play" ...thats bs. just play and quit twisting arms

the patriots won 2 super bowls by stealing signals and taping practices. sour grapes on my part perhaps, but we'll never know.
