How Long Before Our (CF) Wrestling Experts Get Worried?

So Ben Bruns tweeted about ISU getting manhandled tonight at the beauty and the beast event. How long before you so called wrestling experts start to freak out? How long before we turn this around? I know we are young, missing previous recruits, lacking experience and all but is there a bright spot?

Not trying to start a debate, or get hated on. Just asking

Re: How Long Before Our (CF) Wrestling Experts Get Worried?

And you're involved with wrestling at any level how? Aside from assuming that ISU should be in the top 3 each year?

It's probably the "so called" part that is irritating right now.

Is KJ the answer? I don't know. I"m not going to get worried until he's had a few years. Same attitude I had with Cael.

Do you remember how many people were jumping all over Cael for not beating Iowa? That was all from people that had next to no clue about wrestling, but wanted to ***** anyway.

Um, I think he said he wasn't involved and didn't know. That's why people ask questions. They ask because they want to, but don't know. Maybe instead of providing a snide ******* remark you could answer the question if you know so much.

I have the same one since I don't know about wrestling. I have no idea how long it should or will take to turn it around and I don't really know the ins and out's of what have lead to our perceieved struggles.

Re: How Long Before Our (CF) Wrestling Experts Get Worried?

    I share your concerns.

Iowa State now has a 6-6 dual meet record, and is 2-6 in it's last eight going back to the Iowa dual. The two victories were against Northern Illinois and American. In the 6 losses, the Cyclones have been outscored as a team 68-168.

I understand that this is a throw away season and we're dealing with a number of challenges. But some of these duals haven't even been competitive.

Someone tell me why this disappointment and doubt shouldn't be creeping into my mind.

Did you go to the meet tonight? Just wondering.

    It was ugly.

I'll admit that I don't go to many and am not involved in wrestling at all, but I have been to several meets a year in this my 4th year at school, and I could not even sit through this one.

Re: How Long Before Our (CF) Wrestling Experts Get Worried?

We lost to a top ten team, the only matches where I was kind of disappointed were Simonson and Sorenson, and to a lesser extent Carr. We did not match up with Oklahoma and knew going in that it was going to be ugly.

Something like half of our remaining duals are against top 10 teams, it's going to happen. People being doom and gloom after each one aren't paying attention.

Druin is still out with a concussion, and that was a huge swing in the points

Weatherman got choked out, which was a weird random event (made me think it was a Judo match or something...), but he'll be fine on Sunday. The score was tied when he went out.

If we lose to Binghamton in a few weeks, then the sky is falling.

He basically said he didn't know anything, yet ISU should be leaders. He never admitted to not knowing anything. I ask, because 99% of the time, the people that don't know a damn thing about wrestling are the first to comment about how it should work.

We've wrestled teams that have always been extremely competitive and always finish well in Nationals? You're seriously taking the field of the National Duals, and including those losses as a negative? That's basically saying that "We're a terrible basketball team because we lost to Michigan State in the Elite Eight."

And before you argue against it, I realize that not all power schools are at the duals, but you're bringing some kind of infallible view to the table.

Those six losses were to teams ranked 10th, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 3rd, and 6th. With Drouin injured for most of them.

American is ranked 9th by Intermat, and Virginia Tech, who we also own a dual win over, is ranked 3rd by the USA Today poll.

We do not have a single loss this season to a team that is not ranked in the top ten, and have two wins over top ten teams.

Our remaining schedule is stacked, including another top ten team on Sunday and a trip to visit the #1 team in a few weeks. We probably will lose these duals, and depending on how we match up we might lose them badly. Unlike Iowa we are actually running towards the best competition possible to get our guys ready for March. At the end of the year we'll probably be at around .500 for duals, but be very well prepared for the NCAAs. Our individuals are performing at or above expectations with the exception of Weatherman. We just graduated the best senior class we've ever had while also losing the recruiting class that was supposed to replace them when Cael went to Penn State.

Are we an elite team this year? No. But are we still a top tier team even with all these roadblocks? Yes. ISU wrestling is heading the right direction right now.

Re: How Long Before Our (CF) Wrestling Experts Get Worried?

I am not too concerned. I didn't have high expectations for this year, anyway.

Even if I were concerned, I'm not sure there is anyone better to replace KJ unless you can take a chance and lure away TB. There is no "splash" hire who is going to be a recruiting phenom and I trust that KJ can develop talent as well as anyone given his track record.

I am not convinced we will see the same level of success we saw with Cael in his short time with us.

I would be more apt to compare KJ's success compared to Bobby Douglas than to Cael. We were happy with Bobby Douglas, he stepped down to keep Cael in-house. If he didn't do that he would probably still be our wrestling coach and nobody would be the wiser. I think KJ is just as good and so I am satisfied.

I will be next year if we don't improve greatly. We have 4 guys on the squad with losing records. Our little guys believe it or not show improvemt. Our big guys leave something to be desired. Hopefully our "stud RS class" can help out next year.

Being 140 miles away from Ames, no. I wasn't there. I'm arguing different points. Mainly, how the sport works.

Just saying we apparently are wrestling as a second tier level for various reasons against first tier competition. I think we non experts are wondering if it will take one, three, or five years to turn it around so that we can wrestle well again against top teams.

i was there tonight... it is just sad.. It is almost unwatchable... I have been going for years and i can't believe how far we have fallen... I am sorry to say from what I see and hear next yr wont be pretty... I hope I am wrong...

Yes early in the season we beat American and Va Tech BUT they were missing starters and if they dont have a starter they are in big trouble.. they usually will put a wrestler we can beat... so completely changes the meet...

Re: How Long Before Our (CF) Wrestling Experts Get Worried?

Don't lose hope yet....I still believe we will be top 10 at Nationals

    Reader will win 1st place
Druin, Sorenson and Ward still have chances to become AA's

This was not a good performance tonight however. Some of our key guys had empty gas tanks early. Oklahoma came to wrestle and I was impressed with their leg wrestling and tilts. Jones wrestled better against a kid who beat Long last year and Cash if he had more confidence should of beat the kid he wrestled. Shafer always gets me fired up in the first minute of his match but then fizzles out as the match goes on. Imagine if he could wrestle an entire match like he does that first minute. Reader is a Beast and we have yet to see him challenged. Sorenson and Simonson looked tired tonight. We need to get fired up for Okie State. It would be nice to see a couple of upsets...maybe it's Ward's turn.
