Final Thoughts on the 06 Recruiting Class

Here they are Coach Mac's final recruiting class at Iowa State. I'm sure he helped secure a good majority of the 07 class, but here's his last one. It was a love hate relationship for me. There are too many names on this list that never saw action, and some of my favorite all time Cyclones. Just curious what everyone thinks of the class. I've indicated their Rivals stats, and their stats per year at ISU (if they kept their committment).

Austin Alburtis 2 stars DE Dallas, TX

This one is a laugher to me. 2 stars, obviously, when we recruit a guy that we know is talented and will fit somewhere, Rivals just slaps the 2 star cross your fingers on this guy tab on him. I'm most impressed with the 225 to 320.

And the bright spot from the Oklahoma bunch. 3 stars who performed at 4 star level at times and not so much when he was hurt. I thought he was hindered by the interior line for the majority of his career. Glad we had him for 5 and its rare when a Cyclone Freshman sacks the opposing QB in OT to win a game for us. That one made him an instant hit, and the leadership he provided this year will only help us going forward.

Deep snapper recruit. I'm not sure if it was an experiment or what, but I wasn't a big fan. I can't say he made our kicking game any worse, but he didn't seem to make it all that much better.

Lets here it for Mike Nelson and his busts, I don't think Chizek could really connect with some of the recruits and we lost them before we ever had them.

Again, if any of our 3 stars RBs this year turn out anything like A-Rob, I'll take it. He's clearly a case of...hmmm...is he big enough for the Big 12? His H.S. numbers look Great, but I think we'll give him a three star with his size and since he signed with ISU. Another Rivals fail.

Another never a Cyclone guy, amazing Chizek was able to secure the Tubberville recruits at Auburn, maybe he learned something valuable during his days as a Cyclone, would have been nice if we weren't the ones who payed the price.

2 years was not enough for Drenard as a Cyclone, but I don't think we sign guys like Sims if we he would have stuck around.

In conclusion, I'd have to thank Terry Allen and Mac for giving us some great Cyclones. Alford, Fitch and Barney helped too, but this class shows how hard it is to keep guys that find loyalty with a coach and not a program. Chizek must have learned the lesson when he went to Auburn, and I think CPR did a great job from Chizek to him, but it just goes to show what happens to a recruiting class when there isn't stability with the coaches.

I'm putting together a review of a couple more recruiting classes so stayed tuned for those as well.

I don't know how much blame you can put on the recruiter listed on Rivals. McCarney had to sign off on each of those guys. And so did the position coach and recruiting coordinator.

Our Rivals average that year was 2.50 stars; this year it's 2.64. Not a lot of difference.

Re: Final Thoughts on the 06 Recruiting Class

I don't mean to beat on a cyclone that poured his heart and soul into a program, but Zac Sandvig was a 2 star special teams player at best. When we finally get some 3-4 star db's, you'll understand what I mean.

    Never a Cyclone

Yes, he was a Cyclone. In fact, he started a few games his freshman year at DE before having to transfer to JUCO. This would have been his second stint had he made it back.

We still have some guys with no ranking at all. I would assume they will be atleast 2 stars with a small possibility of being 3 stars, but those 0 stars are pulling down the ranking for now.

I understand that. Don't forget that Mac proved he could recruit substantial talent at the most important position: QB (as in Rosenfels, Meyer, Arnaud etc). Neither Chizik or Rhoads have been able to do this as of yet.

I'd say that this recruiting class has plenty of QB talent doesn't it?

He never officially made the official Cyclone Athletic Department roster as far as the official sight goes, so that is why he's been deemed never a Cyclone. When his kids ask dad, I thought you were a Cyclone and they go to Cyclones.com to search the roster he won't be there. There are guys that played spring games and when I cover the 07 class, Bates will only be a Cyclone for one year because he left mid-season of his second. Thats just the methodology I used.
