    Texas DB coach jumps ship

Def. backs coach Akina returns to Arizona - UPI.com

Akina was highly instrumental in the recruitment of four highly touted high school [defensive] backs and some wonder if his departure will affect those pledges, the report said.

Texas staff takes hit, still in flux

In this article off the "Truth & Rumors" from SI.com, it says he recruited 4 highly touted defensive backs. Regardless, there is a lot of turmoil in Texas - not good for a coach that not only has to impress fans, but also ESPN where millions of dollars will be made or lost discussing the formation of the "Longhorn Network". This could be a make-or-break season for Mack Brown.

He and Major Applewhite recruited Malcom Brown to Texas. I don't see any of this changing though.

Re: Texas DB coach jumps ship

What's really going to hurt is that Akina also had the title of Assistant Head Coach. After losing his "Head Coach in Waiting", Mack Brown now has to figure out who's left on his staff to promote to "second in command" and also find a coach to improve the defensive secondary - which could actually be a defensive upgrade after last season.

Wouldn't hurt my feelings any if Texas had a few years of losing football.

I would say this, but I have the feeling that if Texas actually piles up a few losing seasons, that they will take their ball and run to join the ranks of the independants.
