Re: Computer Rankings Update (thru 1/12)

A few additional statistics via KenPom about the performances of our ISU team thus far:

Our turnover percentage continues to be very good with the team at 16.6%, 16th lowest in the nation. The defensive stats also continue to be good, with the team only allowing a 28.1% from the 3pt (10th in the nation) and a 41.2% from the 2pt line (14th in the nation); that leads to a combined FG% of 41.5% which is 6th in the nation.

Our big weakness statistically shows up in the free throw attempts per field goal attempts, where we have a ratio of just 29.1 which is 325th in the nation.

34.5% of our teams points come from the 3pt line, which is 34th most in the nation and the highest in the Big 12. Along the same line, only 16.2% of our points come from the charity stripe, which is 332nd in the nation (remember there are only 345 teams in D1).

And finally, a percentage I'm going to watch all year: Only 22.3% of our minutes played comes from the bench, which is 328th in the nation!

A couple of individual players notes (through games played on January 9):

Diante ranks 38th in the nation in assist rate.
JVB is 26th in the nation in turnover rate and 58th in the nation in block percentage.
Scotty is still first in the nation in fouls committed per 40 minutes with just 0.64 fouls (second lowest is 0.89)!

One other thing I noticed: We are now predicted (54% chance) to beat Baylor on Saturday.

Re: RPI, KenPom & Sagarin Updates (thru 1/12)

I notice how the projected 7-9 conference record continues to stick, despite losing two conference games and no quality wins ... yet.

When I saw your update yesterday, I thought it showed a flaw in those numbers I thought, where in the world are 7 wins going to come?

Then I thought about how the conference power structure seems to have flattened either Colorado is well under the radar, or Missouri & KSU are far below early indicators.

I still think 7 wins is steep for this team, but it's probably a matter of flip-flopping some expectations. It doesn't look like anything more than a split is possible vs. CU, but wins over KSU & Missouri at home might have a higher likelihood.

I wonder how much of the good turnover rate is coaching and how much is a product of mostly playing the same guys almost the entire game and the players knowing each other so well from the small rotation.

We do not pass the ball much, so we therefore may have fewer turnovers. DG has the ball in his hands quite a bit.

Re: Computer Rankings Update (thru 1/12)

Just another tidbit that I noticed tonight while checking out some of the latest calculations...

For non-conference games, our RPI was second best in the nation, right behind Kansas! While our strength of schedule was horrendous, the ability to dominate those games and play our quality opponents close apparently was worth something to the RPI. Just an interesting fact... Enjoy it!
