Recruiting against the Hawkeyes top Iowa Players

For Hoiberg, keeping the best current players in the offseason will be step number 1. Step 2 will be locking up the best of the rest in state for 2012. Even with Paige gone there are still 3 top 100 players left in the state of iowa for that year, I say 2 out of 3 would be a great start.
Here is a link to a game last night between Gesell and Staten, two top 100 guards for the 2012 class. The other top player is Woodbury, who is 7'1. Iowa is said to be leading for Woodbury and in a battle with Creighton for Gesell. Staten was an Iowa State commit two years ago as a freshman, but has backed out of that commitment. For ISU, 2 of these 3 would be great!

We don't recruit against Iowa for the best Iowa players. We recruit against North Carolina for them.

Not a slight against Iowa. They just haven't been in that mix. We really haven't, either, and especially when UNC comes into the picture.

Since we are an elite team now, let's go get that One Cyclone Moment.
Make this one for the ages!

I am going to say within 2 years we will be getting the pick of the litter from in state kids. Hoiberg has started to make his mark and if next years team performs that will help a lot.

I agree to some extent but what about these prospects, including the 7 footer?

Raiders pull away from Lynx - Omaha.com

The Lynx's offensive philosophy worked well in the first half. A.L. coach Jay Sealer wanted to slow the game not only to get good shot selection but also keep the ball out of East's hands — and, specifically, away from 7-foot-1 post player Adam Woodbury.
That plan worked well initially as the Lynx (6-4) found themselves down only 27-23 at halftime.
East's size proved too much over the final 16 minutes. Woodbury, who finished with 18 points and 17 rebounds, scored eight points and grabbed eight boards in the second half.

It's been said on here that we aren't recruiting Woodbury. I have no idea if true or not.

Re: Recruiting against the Hawkeyes top Iowa Players

In case you haven't noticed, in your apparent Hawk-centric viewpoint, it's not Iowa that we have to recruit against for the top players. It's North Carolina, Kansas, UCLA, etcetera.

The thing that Fred actually has to do is bring in the best players regardless of where they are from. Simple as that. And aside from Paige, I have a feeling that there may well be better options available elsewhere.

We barely beat Iowa, and both the Cyclones and Iowa were predicted for last place in the Big 12 and 10. Hence, ISU is far from being an elite program YET. Our great bench, if they stay over for next year, is a great start. But HS recruiting is the bread and butter of Hoibergs success. I think we will be going head to head with Iowa and UNI for the best in the state, we must win those battles and I think we will win them. We are not nearly at the level of UNC, a team I cannot stand because Roy Williams has been a blood sucker from our state while coaching KU and continues to be at UNC.

Why even bring Iowa up? Who cares?

I like the direction our program is heading. Great early results with a very limited roster and some great players coming on board next year.

Build it and they will come and that's what Freddie is doing.

Re: Recruiting against the Hawkeyes top Iowa Players

ISU has backed off Woodbury substantially. And I think Hoiberg is taking a wait and see approach with Staten. It looks like Hoibergs recruiting efforts have been more int he NYC area and Michigan, and that is not a bad thing. The only in-state kid I know the staff really is looking at hard is Gessell. He would be a very good replacement for Christopherson in two years.

Ideally I would rather get the pick of the NYC recruits that Hoiberg has been visiting, and have been coming here. Okoro, Dingle, and one other big, Nolan or Bennett, would be a tremendous class. If TJ can convinve Tokoto to spurn some bigger programs and head this way as well, it would really be a coup.

I think our recruiting strategy has to be nationwide. He's obviously going to battle for the best of the best in Iowa, and I think he will win his share once he's established in Ames.

ISU barely beat Iowa, on the road, in a rivalry game, with their leading scorer(Garrett) playing his worst game of the year. Trust me, our 5 point loss to KU looks a lot better than the drubbing Iowa took last night. When your opponent can go 5 minutes without scoring, and still beats you by 30, you are regressing.

UNI? We rarely recruit the same players as UNI.
