Despite what anyone thinks about the fans...

...you have to admit that Cyclone Alley really showed up tonight. The people who always b**** and moan about the students have some crow to eat.

I for one was very impressed by not only the number but the intensity of the students. They had to carry the weight of all the bluehairs who couldn't be bothered to stand up and clap.

Great job students... now keep it up

I said it, you can go look up my posts.

Give us good basketball, and show us a good time, and we'll come. Cyclone Alley isn't the problem, Iowa State basketball was.

But we can move on, because those days are over.

I still don't like cyclone alley. Glad the students showed up, but still would prefer them showing up just as a student section instead of cyclone alley.

Just win, and nobody will care whether it's Cyclone Alley or a student section or just one huge pep band.

Since we are an elite team now, let's go get that One Cyclone Moment.

I'd prefer this attitude, "give us slightly above average basketball and we'll get you two or three more wins".

I know its difficult for the younger generation to understand what Hilton Magic is all about, but it can provide the last 2 or 3 points for at least 1, if not 2 or 3 wins per season.

And many of the students are right....the old folks need to pull their weight as well.....

Yeah, I saw more empty seats behind the bench that could have been taken by people who could afford them than I saw empty spots in Cyclone Alley.

Re: Despite what anyone thinks about the fans...

After attending tonights game I've decided there are two issues killing the atomsphere:

    1) The gimmicky promos during timeouts. I understand they are a good revenue booster, and thus will never go away, but they KILL the mood. There was one point where we had great momentum, the students started the "cyclone power" chant and they did some stupid game of knockout then did the apple shuffle. The place was dead after the time out. Too many times the crowd gets taken out of it by a freakin' smile cam or burrito bump.

    2) The morgue that is the lower level of the stadium. There are a handful of people down near the floor that really get into the game, riding the refs and encouraging the players. Aside from that, there are a bunch of elderly trying to figure out what the large arc-shaped line is and what the clock above the hoop counts down for. Again, this is a money issue so it wont every change, but it kills things.

I don't think this is entirely true. Back in the Eustachy days, the old guys close to the floor didn't necessarily stand the whole game or make tons of "noise", but they sure as hell ******* at the refs the entire game. I remember (as a student), when I got some tickets to sit in the 2nd row at mid-court......those guys down close really let the refs have it the whole game. Several grey-haired guys...sitting next to their quiet wives.....would just curse the refs to no avail. I'm sure those guys had money and bought their tickets.....

ALL of the people at the game need to step it up to get Hilton Magic back. I think it will happen under Fred....I just wish Hilton Magic could itself help bring back Hilton Magic (I think my brian just popped).

HIS COMMENT FOR DOING SO WAS THIS: DID YOU KNOW WE HAD 300 SEASON STUDENT TICKETS, PAID FOR BY MOMMY AND DADDY, THAT WERE NEVER PICKED UP? SO I THINK I WILL SELL TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC. I'LL GET LESS MONEY BUT WILL HAVE BUTTS IN THE SEATS. THIS IS A DIRECT QUOTE FROM HIM AT A AMES STORY COUNTY CYCLONE LUNCHEON

OK Second symptom of Old Guy syndrome is not being able to admit they are ever wrong. So get used to the complaining, and the "you'll never understand" stuff.

Agreed. The east side balcony never has any people in it. Is this section a cyclone alley section? If so, then its hard to say that cyclone alley showed up today because it was pretty empty up there.

All in all, its pretty tough to complain about the atmosphere today because it was the best I've seen in Hilton in a long time. As long as the people that actually do show up are into it, then it starts rockin.

Re: Despite what anyone thinks about the fans...

The crowd looked great on TV..Cyclone Alley was loud, everything was great. Except the fans right on the floor, especially right behind the ku bench. I've never seen more "fans" sitting back with their arms crossed, while the rest of the place is going crazy. I posted this once before, and someone replied that the seats behind the visitors bench is reserved for their fans, but I saw a lot of gold shirts. I wish there were students there, making it impossible for them to even talk during time-outs.

Overall though, great job out of the fans, and great effort by the team. Some players look great posting mediocre numbers. DG can look bad and posts monster numbers. If a Duke player went for 27 points and 5 assists against ku he'd be the lead on Sportscenter. Gotta love him.

The students will take time to come back, because they dont remember when cyclone basketball didnt suck. they will come back though. it wasnt that long ago that they did fill up those seats (parts of the WM era), and they will again. For the most part, we've been mediocre to bad for the past 9 years. Think about that. Freshmen were 9 or 10 when eustachy had his last successful team. Seniors just a couple years older. As far as most of them are concerned, ISU basketball has been mediocre to bad most of their lives.
