Surprisingly, the OWH's Iowa State coverage isn't half bad.

Re: Barfknecht Story on Johnny Orr

It would be extremely appropriate if ISU could upset Kansas on a night like that, since Orr built part of his early Cyclone Legend cred on his dominance of KU at Hilton.

On the other hand, whenever ISU tries something "special," it seems to end in a letdown (with the exception of the All-Century night, when ISU almost blew it by losing to Nebraska).

This analysis is equal parts glass-half-full, glass-half-empty.

“For all that Johnny did for this program and putting Iowa State basketball on the map, he's the most important figure in Iowa State sports history. He always has been, and always will be.''

Now, that is a powerful quote from Fred Hoiberg!

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

Very cool quote from Freddie. Johnny's legacy is bigger off the court than on. I mean on paper his numbers are nothing too spectacular but judging by Cyclone fan's attitude towards him you'd think he was Coach K or John Wooden. He's that beloved by Cyclone fans; mostly for the pride in which he represented ISU and how finding out you were Cyclone fan made you an automatic friend. As a lifelong Cyclone fan who grew up during the Orr years I watched/attended many, many games that Johnny coached but my best memories of those years are the personal encounters I had with coach Orr. ISU may have had better seasons since Coach Orr but I'm not sure there's ever been more excitement/energy around Cyclone athletics than when he as coaching.

No doubt. I put that in my signature line as soon as I saw it this morning.

Re: Barfknecht Story on Johnny Orr

Nice article. The first couple paragraphs of this story should be required reading for those new to ISU hoops:

    "The following is no overstatement:

Anyone who ever attended an Iowa State basketball game and watched coach Johnny Orr come on to the floor with the band blaring the theme song from “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson” will never forget it.

Opposing coaches would come out of the locker room early just to watch the commotion.

Former Kansas coach Roy Williams would clap. Former Nebraska coach Danny Nee would laugh and shake his head at the uproar from the introduction. Even cranky old Norm Stewart from Missouri couldn't suppress a smile when Orr bounced onto the court like a movie star waltzing down a runway."

I remember those days and the crazy crowds of the 90s. Hope to see a sold out and constantly rocking Hilton tomorrow night! Wish I could be there.

Re: Barfknecht Story on Johnny Orr

This reminded me of the ISU mentions in John Feinstein's book "A Season on the Inside". Had to go find it to find the Danny Manning quote: "One thing I know for sure, though, it's going to be great when their band plays 'Here's Johnny', and Coach Orr comes down the runway. Now that's what I call fun."

Manning was right. Feinstein also wrote about the entrance " If there is a better act in college basketball, no one has found it yet." And on a wonderfully cold January 13, 1988, Manning and the Jayhawks lost again to ISU!
