I'm confused - is a wrist down or not?

When D.J. Williams caught a touchdown pass in the Sugar Bowl for Arkansas, he was called down on review because his "wrist was down."

    (Start at 39 seconds)
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gpeijcaMUQ&feature=geosearch]YouTube - Ohio State holds off Arkansas to win Sugar Bowl - Highlight Of The Night[/ame]

Last night in the Championship game, Michael Dyer of Auburn did pretty much the same thing, but was not ruled down upon review.

    (start at 47 seconds)
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewC5O80sUYU]YouTube - ★NO WHISTLE★ Auburn Michael Dyer was down, then up and running BCS[/ame]

So is the wrist down or not? Does it matter which side of the wrist it is? I would argue Dyer used his wrist more than Williams, who I think used the outside of his hand more than his actual wrist.

Top of the wrist vs. bottom of the wrist. Palm vs. back of the hand. The right call was made in each scenario.

Back of the hand is down. That extends to the wrist. I don't even think Dyer's wrist touched on his play.

Well why we're at it, the side of his foot looked like it was touching too. So is the side of the foot down? Where is the line drawn? I noticed the side of the foot more than the hand/wrist.

Oregon has no one to blame but themselves for that joke of a play.

Play to the echo of the whistle. Heck play to the whistle. With a national championship on the line, Oregon's defenders were inexcusably lazy on that play. Just jump on the pile and the play is over and you might be national champs this morning.

Re: I'm confused - is a wrist down or not?

Seems a little crazy that a tackler can bring a guy down on top of him so he's horizontal, yet get back up and run if the right part of his body doesn't touch the ground. Dyer was clearly brought down by the tackler, yet gets to get up and run again. It just didn't look right.

In their defense, the player looks like he is down so in your head you're thinking, ***did i miss the whistle? well i don't want a late hit 15 yard penalty. well the runner stopped, i must have missed the whistle***

Pretty sure we had knott or klein do it this year and get a penalty in a crucial situation at colorado.

and yes i know, in hindsight, a 15 yd penalty isn't as bad as a 37 yard run.

My thinking exactly. I know everyone is supposed to " play to the whistle" but when you do in a situation like this you get hit with an "unnecessary roughness" penalty.

Didn't that happen twice in that game? Once was down and the other wasn't?

What ever happened to truth, justice and the American Way?

Exactly. If someone were to PILE ON there or even hit the runner when he was just standing around they would have been popped with a 15 yard flag

I'm convinced they'll change the rule next year. Someone is going to get hurt on a cheap shot. Can you imagine if someone had just destroyed dyer while he was unprotected?

It's absurd and it's dangerous. They need to clarify the rules a bit.
