    ISU coaching connection to Championships

Without any research, former ISU head coaches Johnny Majors and Gene Chizek and ast. coaches Jimmy Johnson and Mack Brown have all won national titles. Any that I have missed?

How about Iowa? Bobby Stoops. Any others?

I wonder, in ISU's case, how many other schools have had 4 coaches pass through their coaching system and go on and win national titles. I have always chuckled when the non-informed have referred to ISU as a "coaching graveyard". In actuality, it may be a prerequisite!

Wasn't Jimmy Johnson a grad assistant here?

EDIT: I can't read. Just realized you already had him listed.

Referring to winning national titles as head coaches after leaving ISU. Was Pete Carroll on ISU's staff at one time? Dan McCarney was not a head coach similar to Wally Burnham at Florida State when Bowden was noational champ.

    Re: ISU coaching connectionto Championships

Carroll was at ISU in 1978. I don't care if he was a head coach or not at the time, McCarney is another former ISU coach that went on to be part of a coaching staff that won a national championship.

    Re: ISU coaching connectionto Championships

A couple of things -- one of them bad -- about all the coaches that have passed through ISU and done great things.

One, it dispells all the false rumors that ISU is a coaching graveyard.

Two, a lot of buttheads out there will point to that list and say, "ISU will never have a successful footballl program no matter who is the coach. Look at Chizek. He won only five games in two years with the Cyclones and wins a national title within two years of going to Auburn."

For the record, I believe with the right coach (like we have now) ISU will be a solid program before too long.

I don't understand why this thread keeps getting created over and over again the past couple months. Is this suppose to make us somehow feel better about ourselves?

    Re: ISU coaching connectionto Championships

I think both Mike Stoops and Chuck Long were part of Bob's staff @ Oklahoma during their championship year in 2000.

    Re: ISU coaching connectionto Championships

Ok, I was bored, so here's what I can discern:

ISU Head or Assistant Coaches that won NC's as Head Coaches elsewhere:
Glenn 'Pop' Warner (HC) - Pittsburgh
    Sam Willaman (HC)- Ohio State
    Johnny Majors (HC)- Pittsburgh
    Jackie Sherrill (AC)- Pittsburgh
    Jimmy Johnson (AC) - Miami
    Pete Carroll (AC) - USC
    Mack Brown (AC) - Texas
    Gene Chizik (HC) - Auburn

ISU Head Coaches that won NC's as Assistant Coaches elsewhere:
Jim Criner - Boise State (1-AA)
    Jim Walden - Nebraska
    Jim Myers - UCLA
    Earl Bruce - Ohio State
    Dan McCarney - Florida

As for ISU assistants that one a NC as an assistant elsewhere? That's just too much work.

Re: ISU coaching connection to Championships

If anything, it proves most use Iowa State as a stepping stone to bigger and better things. What will really impress me and make me happy is if the coaches we have want to stay and win at IOWA STATE. It doesn't make me happy at all to see our coaches go on and win elsewhere.

Steve Malchow did a story about this topic a few weeks back on his blog: 2:00 Timeout: The Impact of One Player Can Be Dramatic - Iowa State University Athletics Official Web Site - www.CYCLONES.com - The home of Iowa State Cyclone Sports

I couldn't get the link to go directly to it but if you do a search on his blog for "Chizik" it will take you right to the blog post.
