    Need to go back and re read the book now.

    Very sad to think not many WWII vets left around anymore. I love watching WWII documentaries and reading books about it. My grandpa flew fighter planes in the pacific during WWII. When he retired in 1980 they moved to Table Rock Lake and I would get to spend two-three weeks with them every summer as a kid. Our days consisted of going fishing and watching WWII movies or documentaries. Ever since then I have been hooked on WWII history.

    Got to go with my grandpa for his fighter unit reunion since my grandma had died. Very powerful moment in my life. It was amazing the respect and affection those guys still had for each other even though they were well into their 70's. My grandpa died in 2004 and the 21 gun salute at his funeral still brings chills to me. Also couldn't believe the number of WWII vets that didn't know my grandpa that still showed up at the cemetery that day for him. Along with my dad he is still the person I look up to most in my life even though he has been gone for almost seven years. His life story is amazing as is many others from that generation.

    As Tom Brokaw says those guys truly were our greatest generation.

    I really liked that series, partly because my dad was in some of the same battles, Normandy and Battle of the Bulge. The final episodes where they are stuck in German after the war was exactly what happened to my dad. I asked why he didn’t do more sightseeing after the war and he said he had gone through too much to get killed in some stupid car accident or get shot by some drunk, almost exactly what the final episodes were about. BTW, he thought the 101st guys were the best outfit in the Army. When he was at the 50th anniversary of D-Day in France it was the current generation of 101st troops that escorted and helped the old vets at the ceremony.
