    Question Offense or Defense

Who do you think is further along at this point so far?

    Re: Offense or Defense

It's almost always the defense...coming along the quickest.

I don't know for sure as I'm not seeing it in person.

According to the detailed practice reports coming out, it sounds like the offense to me. Two 99-yard runs in one practice...we are going to dominate this year! [/end sarcasm]

I'm going to say the offense, just because of the progress of the offensive line according to McFarland. Back in December, the offensive line was worse than questionable - it was inexperienced to almost nonexistent. But, if this guy's to be trusted (and why not?), and line's come along much farther than expected, then they just may give us enough to showcase our skill guys (Meyer, Blythe, Sumrall, Scales, and Bass). These guys don't need to be perfect - they've gotta do just enough to allow the offense to burn them with plays that will get the defense to slow their rush. I just have this feeling that the O-line has come far enough to allow that to happen. Here's to hoping I'm right

    Re: Offense or Defense

Pretty much always the defense that is ahead at this point of the season. A lot more of what is asked to be done of a defensive player in the game of football is natural and instinctive, while on offense, there is a lot more learning to be done and there some "unnaturaleness" (is that a word) to it.
Also, it takes 1 good player to make a good defensive play and if one offensive player makes a bad play, the whole play is shot.

    Re: Offense or Defense

I would speculate that the offense is further along due to the simple fact the jucos on the offensive line were here for spring ball. The defense has 5? potential starting jucos that had their first real practice with the team a little more than a week ago. Just from the extra time to learn the playbook and the spring reps the offense should hold the advantage.

    Re: Offense or Defense

    apples and oranges.

Defense will understand it quicker. There is less to learn.

However the offense could have better progress at this point.

    Re: Offense or Defense

Those practice reports are fun to read but every time I finish reading them I have a small knot in the pit of my stomach. Every big play that one unit makes means the other unit broke down. But at least it tells me that they are playing loose and making things happen. That will be a refreshing attitude.

    Re: Offense or Defense

It's really almost impossible to tell considering I have information from a handful of reports to go off of, let alone I have yet to see the team perform since April. Still a fun topic to ponder.

I remember struggling with Illinois St. ... and the following weekend laying the smack down on the Hawks to a tune of 23-3. :)

Looking back, struggling with Illinois St before Iowa and Army afterwards should have been signs of things to come

Yes but then we nearly took Knebraska on the road. It was really just a topsy turvy season.

But then we lost to Baylor at home and blew the division to Kansas on the road
