    Any mechanics out there?

    I'm having a problem with my Volvo S40 that I can't quite figure out, and I hate bringing my car to a mechanic if I don't have a grasp of what is going on.

    Problem: The radiator fan comes on shortly after start-up and continues running for a couple of minutes after the engine is shut off. Under extremely hot conditions with a cranked AC this wouldn't necessarily alarm me, but this isn't normal.

    My thoughts: I recently had the thermostat replaced, and my initial reaction was that this could be the result of an improper install. Another potential culprit could be a bad coolant temp sensor. I've been told that a bad coolant fan relay could also cause this, but I would expect a bad relay switch to cause the fan to run continuously until the battery died.

    Thoughts???

    I would say it was one of the things you mentioned. Coolant temp sensor would be my first thing to check.

    My first guess would normally be bad coolant sensor too. Be careful though, there are sometimes two of them; one for the engine's computer, and one for the traditional gauge.

    But,,, since the thermostat was just changed, it makes me suspicious that its related to that somehow.

    I am sure there are Volvo message boards/websites out there that would have more knowledgeable folk than myself taking pot shots at it.

    Sounds like the heater transistor. Located under the passanger foot well. $150 transistor from Maplin did the trick on mine. Maplin is an electronics store in the UK. (I had to order it)
