    Any mechanics out there?

I'm having a problem with my Volvo S40 that I can't quite figure out, and I hate bringing my car to a mechanic if I don't have a grasp of what is going on.

Problem: The radiator fan comes on shortly after start-up and continues running for a couple of minutes after the engine is shut off. Under extremely hot conditions with a cranked AC this wouldn't necessarily alarm me, but this isn't normal.

My thoughts: I recently had the thermostat replaced, and my initial reaction was that this could be the result of an improper install. Another potential culprit could be a bad coolant temp sensor. I've been told that a bad coolant fan relay could also cause this, but I would expect a bad relay switch to cause the fan to run continuously until the battery died.

    Thoughts???

I would say it was one of the things you mentioned. Coolant temp sensor would be my first thing to check.

    Re: Any mechanics out there?

My first guess would normally be bad coolant sensor too. Be careful though, there are sometimes two of them; one for the engine's computer, and one for the traditional gauge.

But,,, since the thermostat was just changed, it makes me suspicious that its related to that somehow.

I am sure there are Volvo message boards/websites out there that would have more knowledgeable folk than myself taking pot shots at it.

Sounds like the heater transistor. Located under the passanger foot well. $150 transistor from Maplin did the trick on mine. Maplin is an electronics store in the UK. (I had to order it)
