    Pelini snubs Naval Officer

Bo Pelini made a promise to naval officer Morgan Ryan. Now he needs to keep it. - College Football News | FOX Sports on MSN

Not sure what to think about this. The article is pretty sensationalist, and is clearly trying to paint Bo in a bad light. The incident seems a little classless on Bo's part, but snippets like these are pretty over the top:

When I informed Ryan that Pelini told me the whole thing was a joke, his face fell. He sat in front of me, looking a bit stunned. He displayed no anger, just sat there, staring into space.
It was a gut-wrenching moment to witness. Ryan had been let down by the head coach of his favorite team. In front of his peers. But Ryan kept his emotions in check. He was not going to dishonor Pelini.
    What is your impression?

    Pretty crappy, but...

I agree with the over the top business. Perhaps the writer is paid by the word?

It was a stupid idea to begin with, being on the field would have been plenty to help Pelini shed his abusive stepfather image, but to then say the whole thing was a joke just made a bad thing worse.

That's a good thought. Writer appears to be making a mountain out of a molehill, a legit molehill to be sure, but a molehill nonetheless.

    Re: Pelini snubs Naval Officer

Let me get this straight. He got a free ticket to the bowl game and was able to stand on the sidelines with his favorite team and I'm supposed to feel sorry for him?

Without actually being there its hard to say if Pelini was joking or not but I could see a situation where he was jokingly "one-upping" Sarkisian. Regardless, it's unfortunate that the kid thought he was going to be able to call the play.

Pelini probably thought he would be up by 40. He should have just said that the game did not allow him to do it and everyone would understand. However, he has the social skills of a slug so this is what you get.

The kid should have known better. You can't let an amatuer try to call a play when you have a fine tuned, precision offense like Nebraska. You don't want some sailor bringing that juggernaut of an offense to a grinding halt.

    Re: Pelini snubs Naval Officer

honestly, it was probably hyperbole, but at what point in the bowl game did Pelini have time to relax and call a "gimme" play. Also, had the navy man been studying the playbook? How would he call a "play"?

    Re: Pelini snubs Naval Officer

Bo was trying to win the game I'm sure if it was a blow out and Ryan brought it up that Bo would let him call a play but it didn't turn out that way for NU so Bo couldn't afford to waste a play.

Very few coaches do this for whatever reason. The exception of course is Kirk Ferentz. He allows an amateur to call every play.

The best part of this story is that Nebraska lost the holiday bowl!!! Love it!

Actually, if CPR did this, I wouldn't feel very good about it. But lucky for us CPR would never do this.

+1 If he was up by 30 or 40 he might have let him do it. Say "a play action pass to the tight end" or something vague like that and let them call the actual play..

But, as you said, Pelini has zero social skills so he puts it bluntly like the ***-bag he is.

    Re: Pelini snubs Naval Officer

I respect Officer Ryan for the job he does and deeply appreciate his service in the Navy.

That said, he is obviously a member of a cult. His answers to the questions aptly demonstrate how deep L Ron Pelini's hooks are into this young man.

    Re: Pelini snubs Naval Officer

The Naval Officer couldn't have called a play that would have worked any worse than those being called by the coaches...Nebby was really bad. I think when you give your word to a serviceman you should mean it.

By the way, I understand Bo is looking at firing his Offensive Coordinator.
