    Cubs close to getting Garza?

Would be a huge get for this pitching staff.

Sucks to see my second favorite team trimming the payroll and trading talent away. But at least Garza would be going to my favorite team!

The central would get more competitive. He would be a longer term solution as an "ace".

Re: Cubs close to getting Garza?

yeah the cubs and rays have been talking for a while, but it doesnt seem to be too serious at this point.. the cubs probably are willing to give up hak-ju lee and robinsion chirinos and a pitcher like carpenter or jay jackson from the minors while the rays are probably asking for one of either christopher archer, brett jackson, andrew cashner, and tyler colvin to go with lee and chirinos, and hendry said all 4 will NOT be traded. rays really want archer i've heard but hes not going anywhere.

would really love it if the cubs could put a deal together with lee, chirinos, a lower pitching prospect(jackson or carpenter?) and then throw in gorz... dont know if the rays will be happy enough with that deal though. if you cant get him then you just wait for the youth to come up. Brett Jackson is going to be a flat out stud in CF, and if Archer and McNutt keep improving the way they have been they have the ability to be very very special in the rotation

At this point I think it would be extremely dumb to trade for Garza now. Had we been able to sign Brandon Webb and move Z then I would have been all for the Garza deal at this time, because the team would have been closer with those pieces. Adding Pena and Garza does little to improve this team.

In 2 years we should have a lot of young guys ready to perform and a lot of those bad contracts off the books so we can add a couple of free agents.

i disagree to an extent.. garza is under team control until 2014 and is a very good pitcher. he wold be wonderful to add to the rotation, but at the right price. any deal that would involve brett jackson, archer, mcnutt, or cashner is too high of a price. now guys like lee, vitters, jay jackson, carpenter, or chirinos are expendable in the cubs system.

i think i would like for the cubs to wait on the youngsters to come up though.. if they continue to develop, then in two years Archer and McNutt will be in the rotation (possibly cashner too) and brett jackson will be taking the reigns from Byrd as the everyday CF. and around that same time frame hak-ju lee may be pushing castro over to 3B and taking the SS job unless vitters reaches his potential, then castro would go to 2nd.

No doubt he is good, but after arbitration how much money will he command? trading for him if we could compete is one thing. Trading away prospects just to have him for 2-3 years while we are in rebuild mode is another and for me doesn't make much sense.

If there were multiple moves this offseason, I'd be for changing things up. However, I don't think we will make very many moves the next 2 years at all.

Chicago Cubs Top 20 Prospects for 2011 - Minor League Ball

After the individual grades he hands out he gives a summary of the minor league system for Cubs. It may not be worth it to jump the gun and trade for pitching now when hitting may be our big need in 2-3 years.

By John Sickels:........"The Cubs system is unbalanced. On the positive side, you have a huge amount of pitching, including a large number of high-ceiling arms: McNutt, Archer, Carpenter, Simpson, the big bevy of arms in the teens. There are some polish/command guys as well, and Jay Jackson straddling the midpoint. The foundation for a strong pitching staff is clearly here.

The hitting is another issue. I love Brett Jackson, and there is plenty of up-the-middle material with Lee having the best potential. But there is a significant lack of power and impact bats, and I'm losing faith in Vitters. Golden could be anything."

I was completely on board with trading for Garza about 1 month ago, but the more I think about it the less I like it.

Levine just reported on the radio it is a done deal.

    Cubs send: Archer,Lee,Chirinos,Guyer, and Fuld

TB sends: Garza, minor league P and minor league OF

    Hendry panicked IMO

Seems like a high cost but that is the price you have to pay for an above average starting pitcher that is under control for 3 more years. Like all trades, we will have to evaluate it down the road when we see how the prospects turn out.

I'd need to know who the minor leaguers coming back were before I could evaluate this trade.

Garza is very good, I like the pick up, but trading with Tampa makes me nervous. That organization is great at evaluating talent.

Re: Cubs close to getting Garza?

I think they gave up too much. Garza isn't an elite talent. He will look better than he is coming from the AL to the NL and feasting on the Pirates/Astros, but the Cubs are mortgaging the future to semi-compete in the next 3 years. This surprises me because the rest of the Cubs team isn't ready to compete over these next 3 years IMO.
