Joe Paterno Denies Rob Bolden Transfer

Penn State's Joe Paterno denies QB Rob Bolden's request to transfer - ESPN

I didn't even know he can do that. Why not let a kid transfer that doesn't want to be there?

He can deny the release which means the kid loses a year of eligibility when he transfers. However, he can still transfer

More coaches should do this IMO...players make a commitment...they need to stick with it.

I don't buy that. As quickly as coaches bail out on the kids, the kids can't be held to a higher standard.

If a coach doesn't have to fulfill the years of his contract, the kids don't have to do 4 years at a place that doesn't fit for them, either.

What about the commitment of coaches who "promise" in recruiting that the kid will start by his Junior year?

Basically, yeah. My feeling on this is that as long as college coaches are allowed to break their commitment to the players, the players should be allowed to break their commitment to the coaches.

I think not allowing a kid to go to certain schools is ok. Trying to keep him from leaving at all is just wrong.

Tell him he can't go to another Big 10 school or Pitt and send him on his way.

So the kid starts 8 games, gets hurt, then gets benched. Now it is an open competition for the starting job. Sounds like a kid that knows he's not as good as the guy the replaced him.

What does this accomplish except give opposing coaches more ammunition for negative recruiting against him?

I would imagine that this is just CYA. If he were to be released, go to a rival school, and do well, then JoePa would get grief for letting him go too easily.

He is also sending a message to his other players about sticking with their commitments to PSU.

Quite frankly, I'd have been ****** as well watching the quarterback who replaced me throw 5 interceptions.

I think JoePa handled the whole thing poorly. You either play for this year and redshirt Bolden or play for the future and stick with him.

I would normally agree, but not with this particular coach.

The kid has a red-shirt year to burn, so he'll still be able to play for three years. Though honestly he sounds like he is just being a ***** because he isn't promised the starting spot.

I love it!!! MCD should have done that to Wes J. If I was a coach I would never approve a transfer request.
