ESPN RPI & KenPom Update (thru 1/3)

Another update on the KenPom & ESPN RPI ranks, I plan on an updated thread after each of our games... The number in parentheses is the change since our last game, with 'NC' indicating no change.

The update from the KenPom rankings through last nights' win against NIU:

    National Ranking: 44th (+2)
    Big 12 Ranking: 8th (NC)

    Projected Conference Record: 7-9 (NC)
    Projected Overall Record: 20-11 (NC)

    SOS: 316th (+5)

    Records:
    0-0 vs Top 25, 0-0 vs Top 50, and 3-2 vs Top 100

A Few Notes from KenPom - The defense continues to shine with an opponent effective FG% of 41%, 6th in the nation. A 28.5% on 3pt attempts, good for 17th in the nation, and a 40.1% on 2pt attempts, which is 9th in the nation. A key stat that I like for our offense this week is the turnover percentage of just 16.5%, which is 12th in the nation. We continue to rely heavily on 3-pointers with 34.5% of our points coming from behind the arc, 36th highest in the nation. Last update I highlighted our bench playing minutes, and I'll do it again this week with only 22.3% of the minutes coming from the bench, which is 329th out of 345.

An update from the ESPN RPI through the NIU win:

    RPI Rank: 101st (-6)
Lunardi Preferred RPI Rank: 10th (+5)

    SOS: 308th

    Offensive Quotient: 36th (-7)
    Defensive Quotient: 18th (+1)
    Adjusted Scoring Margin: 13th (+2)

RPI Records: 0-0 vs Top 25, 0-1 vs Top 50, and 1-1 vs Top 100

    I like that old Kenpom.

Let my Fred's Posse Ride: Georges, Naz, Hogue, Bryce, Nader, Monte, Matt, and McKay.

Another addition I'd like to make, Scott Christopherson currently averages only 0.69 fouls per 40 minutes played. This is the best in the nation, an entire 0.10 better than the second best, with a minimum of 40% of team minutes needed to qualify.

To me that indicates he could play a little more aggressive on defense. Are just keep popping 3s:)

    Well done! Nice writeup.

A note of interest on the bolded part, Nebraska is giving up 39% of their points from behind the 3pt line, 2nd highest in the country. And that's with holding their opponents to 28.3% from 3pt range. Because they also have the second highest 3PA/FGA (3pts attempted per field goal attempted) in the country.

In other words, they force their opponents to shot a TON of 3's, which I'm sure is in part because they have the best 2pt FG% against in the country.

All of which plays into our hands, assuming Scotty can play and we can knock down our 3's.

I'll agree with you there for the most part. If we aren't consistently putting the opponent in the bonus, then you can afford to put some additional pressure on the guards away from the basket.

But, with our limited supply of players I'm okay with him having such a low average.

Cm'n, Debbie Downer, thug life teaches you good things. He plays decent defense hands off.

They practice like we do. Scrum style. They have better defense than offense.

Ken Pomeroy's ratings tend to overrate teams with weak schedules.

    Sincerely,
    My 2010 NCAA Tournament Bracket

P.S. Thanks for picking Duke right though.
