    Propaganda Redux (link)

Many disagree or have a problem with the substance, I know, but this article today at OpinionJournal.com I found interesting:

    Propaganda Redux
Take it from this old KGB hand: The left is Abetting America's enemies with its intemperate attacks on President Bush
    By Ion Mihai Pacepa
. . . I spent decades scrutinizing the U.S. from Europe, and I learned that international respect for America is directly proportional to America's own respect for its president. . . .
The Wall Street Journal also had a good (and lengthy) lead today:

How Credit Got So Easy and Why It's Tightening
By Greg Ip and Jon E. Hilsenrath
. . . The origins of the boom and this unfolding reversal predate last year's mistakes. They trace to changes in the banking system provoked by the collapse of the savings-and-loan industry in the 1980s, the reaction of governments to the Asian financial crisis of the late 1990s, and the Federal Reserve's response to the 2000-01 bursting of the tech-stock bubble. . .
I'm not positive, but I think access to this second link is free. The WSJ recently redid their website, and it appears so there.

If not try searching the author's names on Google News. I often have luck that way. If many do this, though, my impression is that it may cause it to be gated (perhaps just temporarily).

It's in "Off Topic" for a reason. You don't want to read it, don't hit the "Off Topic" link.

Why not? As I said I found it interesting, the kind of information many here might otherwise not come across.

While CF was down recently, I posted an Iraq-related article on CN that was subsequently quoted extensively by other news organizations (including at least two network news broadcasts the next night). It probably won't happen with this link, but still I don't see what the problem is.

I have seen articles linked on numerous other Off-topic boards.

    Whatever.

If that was directly towards me, I'm sorry I don't have 24 hours a day to spend posting endless messages on an internet message board. I don't post here much though I have before elsewhere. It wouldn't affect me much if Jeremy wants to get rid of this board.

I do find the quality of any debate, however, related to how informed the participants are.

    Re: Propaganda Redux (link)

I would just add that I can understand why SLCyclone (and others surely) are sensitive to this op-ed.

I consider myself a "classical liberal" and, as such, dedicated to the constitutional principles which the US was founded upon (e.g., the first amendment). If the US is ultimately 'successful' in Iraq, it might also be said that changes in policy (US and Iraq) conducive to that end might have resulted from the criticism (e.g., the good cop bad cop thing).

There is actually in a way little that I agree with GWB on. However, to those who know me in real life - some misgivings and what I considered missteps aside - sticking it out in Iraq is one thing I have consistently been supportive of.

    God help us.

    Re: Propaganda Redux (link)

'Intemperate attacks' ... this from the bastion of free speech and god loves America best? The biggest foreign policy disaster (Fiasco in Iraq) of a lifetime and the WSJ just wants to sweep it under the rug?

Classic case of advising the ostrich to hide from the wolf by sticking it's head in the sand.

Free speech and freedom of the press means having the ability to have uncomfortable discussions about bungled decisions which are causing significant loss of life.

    Re: Propaganda Redux (link)

It seems the first article is another left-bashing opinion of one individual, yet if the WSJ publishes it, it must be gospel.
Regarding propoganda, it's all part of the grand game of this often twisted, sick world! I'm sure the US never used propoganda to defeat the Soviet Union and its allies during the cold war (or in any other wars). I'm not taking sides here, but just pointing out propoganda is a weapon used by both sides.

I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.

I didn't take the time to look into the article links posted above, but I don't quite understand the hostility towards Clone83. It was posted in the "Off Topic" category, meaning it doesn't relate the Iowa State. If you're just looking for Cyclones threads DON'T READ THIS ONE! It's not like this is the first time an off-topic thread has been posted.

Take it from this old KGB hand: The left is Abetting America's enemies with its intemperate attacks on President Bush
    By Ion Mihai Pacepa
    QUOTE]

Ion Mihai Pacepa, born 28 October 1928, in Bucharest, Romania, is the highest-ranking intelligence official ever to have defect from Romania. He defected 29 years ago in July, 1978.

Once his value as a defector became dated in 1987, Pacepa began earning his living publishing a series of books chronicling his experiences as a communist spy chief, all of which were highly popular in Romania.

When he interviews and when he writes, Pacepa interviews and writes for American conservative magazines, such as National Review Online, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Times, and the online newspaper FrontPage Magazine.

From Pacepa, expect right wing rhetoric. His current offering in the WSJ is, surprise, criticizing critics of GWB and other past presidents and, another surprise, labeling them as abettors of our enemies. Another fresh idea from our patriotic conservative friends.

Believe what you will, but consider the source.
