DG: Shoot less, drive and dish more

I have been impressed with DG's ability to finish and find the open man this year. He also started the year by shooting the outside shot well, but there were several games where he really struggled. As soon as Scott comes back (which should be Saturday), I believe DG needs to dish more and drive to the lane, and shoot less 3's. He was 8-24 last night, and most of those were layups. He was 4-13 against Virginia. He was 7-23 against UNI. He was 5-24 against Iowa. He seems to struggle against decent teams. He is a great point guard, and he should stick to that role instead of trying to be the shooting guard. Just my opinion.

I'd let Coach Hoiberg decide who should shot what and when.

Re: DG: Shoot less, drive and dish more

First half was painful. I think DG started off 0-10 and 1-2 from the charity stripe. He certainly made up for it in the second half though. I think he was just feeling the pressure without SC running around the perimeter to kick it out to.

That said, I would like the team as a whole to cut down on the out of control drives into the lane followed by a circus shot with 25 seconds left on the shot clock.

Maybe you should consult Hoiberg and Lutz and shared your opinion? If they didnt want him to shoot he wouldnt be, but its obvious they do.

I really didn't have a problem with any of DG's shots last night. They were leaving him open, he has to shoot those.

Pretty sure CFH did address this specifically in his post game interview. He didn't single DG out, but said he was frustrated by all the bad shots we took with plenty of time left on the shot clock.

Re: DG: Shoot less, drive and dish more

I don't mind when DG shoots as long as it is a good shot. He took a lot of bad shots early in both the Virginia and NIU games. He settled down and started waiting for better looks, and when that happened, he scored.

He also needs to really work on jumping straight up on his jump shot. He actually shoots at a high percentage when he does this. Unfortunately he tends to lean from one side to the other or fade away. When he does this he makes it 5% of the time

This isn't from the guy in the balcony that was yelling "Stop shooting!!!", is it?

I don't have a problem with him taking open 3's, but many of his missed layups in traffic were terrible. I believe he air-balled 2 lay-ups under the rim in the first half.

This. I just think DG was forcing it last night with SC out of the lineup. I still want him to take every open look he gets.

Taking the outside shots opens up the drive and dish a little bit more. But yeah, he shoots too many jumpers. The percentage doesn't justify the number of attempts.

Re: DG: Shoot less, drive and dish more

It doesn't take a D1 coach to see that DG cannot shoot consistently outside of 10 feet. With SC out last night he probably had to shoot a little, but I totally agree with the initial post.
DG should do what he does best--play good D, dish, and drive to the basket for scoop shots or layups. Let SC, Edge, VanB do the shooting. Percentages just don't lie.

Re: DG: Shoot less, drive and dish more

DG is at his best about 10 feet away from the hoop. From there he can take his little step back jumper or dish it off. If he has a wide open three then take it. Other then that get closer to the hoop.
