    Reno, Nevada

My wife and I are going to Reno in February for a flooring convention.

I'd love to hear if there is anything to see and do there (other than gambling- I think I can find some of that). Usually we like to take in historic sites, or nice natural features (state, national parks, etc).

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Dependant upon free time and a rental car, drive up to Lake Tahoe. Easily, one of the most beautiful inland lakes in the world.

Definitely rent a car and do tahoe or you will be pigging out on casino food. In fact, eat your meals at Tahoe. Even Sacramento is not that far beyond tahoe. Driving for scenery is great unless they have avalanches.

The ranch expanded their options although the govt may own it now.

This! Not to mention that Reno is one of the dirtiest towns I've ever been to. On the bright side...Tahoe is amazing. Get in some skiing or boarding if you have time--going down the hill toward the lake is a breath taking sight.

Reno is a great town...even I feel like a male model there.

    It's depressing.

Whores. You might have to pay extra to allow the old lady to tag along. (or tag in?)

This right here. Stay south Lake Tahoe if you can, take the gondola up to the mountain, a few blocks from your casino, and go boarding. They call it Heavenly for a reason you know.....

And.......this is why I send my wife emails translating CF ideas for our trips rather than links to the site.

We're staying at the Peppermill Resort Casino, which is where the convention is located.

Peppermill is nice...newest hotel/casino there I believe. I spent one night at the Peppermill and then tucked my tail and went to Tahoe for a week.

    Re: Reno, Nevada

It's funny somebody mentioned the National Bowling Stadium. I bowl in the national tournament every year and this year and last year it is in Reno. Our first experience in Reno was at the tournament in 2006. I will reiterate what another poster said, Reno itself is a giant ********. The downtown area is dirty and filled with thugs. If staying downtown stay in one of the big 3 casino's (Circus Circus, Silver Legacy, or El Dorado) as they are all connected via skywalks and you never have to venture onto the streets.

My advice, like others have said, stay in the Tahoe Area, specifically South Lake Tahoe. It's much cleaner, still has casinos on the border, and just more fun. Plus it's only about a 35 minute drive (all four lane) down to Reno. There are only two setbacks. One, it's a lot more expensive to stay in Tahoe and two, because you're going in February the weather may be an issue. They get a ton of snow in that area and I'm not sure how fun the driving would be on some of those mountain highways if it is snowing.
