    SI's bubble watch

    IN THE MIX
    Iowa State (12-2, 0-0; RPI: 96, SOS: 290)
Nice job by the Cyclones to nab a road win at Virginia. This is way better than I expected Fred Hoiberg's first season in Ames to go. They have big opportunities at home against Kansas and Baylor next week to really announce some intentions.

Heh, we're listed as a "bad loss" for Virginia though.

He probably was thinking about it with UNI.

True. Baylor's and Nebraska's aren't that much better.

If the Hawkeyes were able to put something on the court it could have been a bit better. That was supposed to be a quality win.

And probably Cal as well. He doesn't even have them listed. Both of our losses aren't bad enough to haunt us if were on the bubble come selection Sunday but they were games we should have won.

I have that same expectation in the big picture, but simply being anywhere near the discussion feels better than ... well, not being near the discussion.

These next three games are huge, in that regard. I don't see having a good shot vs. Kansas, could see at least a split in the other two games (pending Scotty's situation). Somehow win all three, and bubble talk will gain steam.

For a transitional season like this, the more positive-buzz generation, the better.

    Re: SI's bubble watch

Kansas will blow us out, but our team plays tough enough defense I think we could probably keep a number of games close. I still think our record is going to plummet pretty quickly, but I don't think we'll be manhandled by more than a couple teams.

Next year we'll be in the tournament, not this year.
Amazing that Iowa State and Bubble are even on an ESPN website though.

    Re: SI's bubble watch

I think we will deserve spots over teams that will get in the tourney. However those spots will be reserved for the mid-majors that really make the tourney what it is with upsets. Cyclones will need 22 wins to earn a 8-10 seed, play like last night and were hoping to finish above .500.

If the team managed to win all 3 next games, they will be more than just talked about as a bubble team. At that point, they will be pretty much probable NCAA tourney bound. That said, Kansas is going to destroy us.
