Official Release: Hoiberg adds two walk-ons

    The official release is out...

AMES, Iowa- Iowa State head menís basketball coach Fred Hoiberg announced today the addition of two walk-ons to the Cyclone roster for the remainder of the 2010-11 season.

Andrew Mitchell, a redshirt senior from Ft. Dodge, Iowa and three-year member of the Cyclone football team, and Austin McBeth, a sophomore from Wayland, Iowa and current member of the Cyclone football team at quarterback, have joined the Iowa State menís basketball team.

Mitchell played one season of basketball at Iowa Central (2006-07) before joining the Iowa State football team. Mitchell was a member of Ft. Dodgeís 2006 basketball team which made its first Class 4A boyís basketball state tournament appearance in 15 years. Mitchell averaged 7.3 points and 3.1 rebounds while earning All-CIML recognition.

McBeth just finished his first season on the Iowa State football team as a walk-on. McBeth was a three-year starter and a two-time all-conference performer as a member of the Wayland basketball team, leading the team in scoring as a junior (14.2 ppg) and senior (13.2 ppg). He helped his team advance to the state semifinals in his sophomore season.

What does this move do for the team? There are already guys that dont see PT, are these two better or does putting them on the roster make some other difference?

Nothing to see here mods. Keep moving.

This is a smart move. I've always wondered why coaches stay with small player rosters when their campuses are filled with guys like these who can fill your bench. In situations of foul trouble, injury, or overtime, it just makes sense to have more than 9 guys on the roster.

Converted football players on the bench >>>>> No players on the bench

Of course they aren't starters on the football team. The starters aren't willing to jump over to the Basketball team in hopes of some playing time, if Rhoads would even let them.

Who? The one who quit the team or the one who was in a car accident where alcohol is suspected according to law enforcement?

Re: Official Release: Hoiberg adds two walk-ons

This is how I imagine it went down:

Coach Hoiberg: "You happen to have any guys that will probably never play for you but are athletic enough to play Big 12 basketball in the doomsday scenario that we get in serious foul trouble or have a couple injuries?"

CPR: "I have just the guys..."

That part of the article has been removed, I can only assume because alcohol was not involved.

For Jordan's sake, I hope you are right!

I know a kid who is a walk on TE for the football team that played a few years of D3 basketball-- I'd bet he got a call too.

The walk-ons can go 2-0 against NIU this year.

Re: Official Release: Hoiberg adds two walk-ons

Nice to see Mitchell get a chance, but going from how they looked in high school(and early on in college), I would have thought Reid Branderhorst - Iowa State University Athletics Official Web Site - www.CYCLONES.com - The home of Iowa State Cyclone Sports might be a slightly better choice. At least in high school Reid was the more impressive player.

I wonder if Duran Hollis was asked to walk-on. I remember when we recruited him there was talk of playing both basketball and football...

Re: Official Release: Hoiberg adds two walk-ons

Are they able to suit up immediately?

I'm not too worried about depth vs. NIU (knock on wood), but it would be good to have more players available after that point.

It'd be fun if those players had impact even in isolated cases this season.
