Looks like the initial data collection was in 2001. It would be interesting to see where those kids are at now. Does the trend continue or does it not? I know in my case, I was a pretty big baby, but have settled out to 6'2", 160lbs...nothing you'd confuse with "obese".

Don't know why they don't have those 9 month olds on the treadmill, not watching tv, video gaming, etc.

Curious if they've altered the definition of obese. It seems that the medical community has been casting larger nets for all sorts of childhood ailments and afflictions. Pretty sure that, under the new definitions, I'd have qualified for two or three when I was a child.

    Re: Dumb parents

There are so many variables when it comes to children in terms of length and such, that unless your 2 year old weighs something like 50 lbs I wouldn't be too terribly worried. My wife and I actually have the opposite problem - my 2 year old is in the 25th percentile in terms of height, and ever since she was born she has had problems staying on the chart in terms of weight - I couldn't even tell you whether she's 25 lbs yet. She wasn't a few weeks back when we took her in because we thought she was getting an ear infection.

On a related note, I took my 12 year old lineman in for an ear infection, and discussed his size with his doctor (5'4, 145 lbs). The doctor thought he was in good shape, and that as soon as he hit puberty, he'd burn any baby fat off of him.

While it doesnt excuse those that really feed thier kids junk. I think 9 mos is too soon to even know where a kid will end up.

    Re: Dumb parents

9-month olds is tough to gauge. I was an absolutely huge baby, I mean pure fat, and I weighed 142 pounds when I graduated from high school and I'm 6'3". At two they should be moving around some and getting rid of that chub.

    Re: Dumb parents

My son was in the 85% for weight, but he was also in the 87% for height at 9 months in November so is he obese or at risk? I would call it proportional.

Our pediatrician said that was the main thing they look for. If you're 90% in weight, it's not concerning if you're around 90% in height. On the other hand, if you're kid is 90% in weight and 40% in height, you might have a situation on your hands.

    Re: Dumb parents

Our son was rather large at 9 months. I don't know where he was on the weight chart exactly, but he was up there. Then at 15 months, he couldn't keep pants up because he is so skinny. There are so many changes that occur between 9 months and 2 years that I don't know why they even bother doing these studies. If a child is not walking by 12 months then they probably are obese, but that will take care of itself. I don't think that any parent should start worrying until 2 years of age. Just keep them on a good diet and let the hyperactive nature of toddlers take care of the rest.

We've got a willowy youngster as well. She's right around the 50th percentile for height but has been tracking below the 5th percentile her entire life when it comes to weight. She turns 5 tomorrow and hasn't even broken 35 pounds yet. Thankfully we've got a good pediatrician who doesn't freak out about the weight issue considering she's growing, healthy, and has plenty of energy to annoy mom and dad all day long.

    Re: Dumb parents

One dumb thread. The bigger babies initially can fend off illness better. Worry about it when they hit four.
