    Plasma or LCD??? Help Needed...

    Clones,
I'm about to purchase my first HD on Wednesday and I'm stuck. I don't know whether to go plasma or LCD. I've done a ton of research but I was wondering what you guys have and your opinions on this. I'm not a techy by any means so any help would be great. I'm going to buy a 42 inch and I have been liking the LG brands.

    Any help would be great....thanks.

All depends on the room and your viewing habits. If you are a gamer, LCD, if the room is bright, Plasma. I think we pretty much settled it last week, we all decided we have totally different opinions and I am the only one that is correct. That was pretty much the group consensus.

Re: Plasma or LCD??? Help Needed...

    I vote LCD.

They don't reflect light the way Plasmas do, so I actually like LCD better in a bright room. OTOH, Plasmas have more natural colors. Samsung and Sony seem like the best brands for LCD. Panasonic and Pioneer seem like good brands for Plasma. I have an older DLP RPTV and a newer SXRD projector currently. I helped my parents buy their LCDs last fall. I'm planning to buy into this new LCD technology in a year or two once prices come down more (note that these new & pricey models are coming out very soon)...
Samsung 81 Series anticipation thread - AVS Forum

That AVS Forum site has lots of great info. LCDs seem to be getting larger and larger in size w/ some 57" models available. Contrast ratios have gotten pretty good in the past couple of years. LCD is more energy efficient than plasma. At 42", 1080p probably doesn't matter much (unless you sit super close) if that saves you some $.

Since at least 50% of what you watch now will be in 480i (SD) you should also see the TV in that format. Every plasma I've sen looks like crap when you stick non-hd material on it.

    If you've got room for a rear-projection set...I'd highly recommend the Sony 50in set - KDS-50A-2000 (I think it's KDS-50A-2020 now).

Great picture in both HD and non-HD.

I second that, I have the 60" model and the pic is better than my LCD or Plasma. But it is 18" thick, but other than that it beats the lcd or plasma in every way. You just cannot hang it on a wall.

If you calibrate it correctly it is not too bad. But who watches SD tv, if it is not in HD or is not an ISU event, I don't watch it.

Re: Plasma or LCD??? Help Needed...

After much of my own research, I opted for the less costly LCD about six months ago and haven't regretted my decision - 56" Panasonic. My cousin owns a TV store in central Iowa and he tells me there's no difference in components between a Samsung and Panasonic; Samsungs are just more expensive (he carries both).

The other nugget he shared with me is that Mediacom "hides" HD signals in their "expanded basic" package, so I didn't need to purchase the HD package. It took some hunting, but they're probably ten of them in the higher "subchannels", ie - 113.6, etc.

I guess it kind of depends if you have crazy, Brianhos kind of money, or just regular money

Seriously, though.....I have a 50" LG plasma and I really, really like it. Plus, the heat that puppy puts off will help warm my house this winter.

What are these 50" LCD and Plasma models running? Just curious (no, don't need another TV already!).
