That's why they start mucking with the timing, etc, eventually to generate more revenue.

I mean, to make it more safe.

This is not a direct comparison since it includes speed cameras, but Cedar Rapides is making money....

Traffic camera revenue for Cedar Rapids tops $1 million | TheGazette

The red light and speed cameras have now netted Cedar Rapids more a million dollars.
After nine months, the city says it’s collected more than $2.6 million in fines. A little over $1 million of that goes to the company who operates the cameras. So doing the math, that means the city of Cedar Rapids has taken in more than $1.5 million in net revenue.
The city says that money goes into a general police fund.

However, there is another article that indicates red light violations have decreased over 7 months by 60%.

This makes me wonder if rear-ending accidents have increased.

    Re: Traffic Cameras

Of course it's a money grab - ALL moving violations are a money grab, whether enforced by a police officer or by a traffic cam.

Yesterday on the morning news in Davenport it was reported that the company that owns the traffic cameras in Davenport sent the city a check for ~$750,000 in violation money - no small chunk in change. And it's not like they're nicking from people who are 1 mph over the limit - it was reported in the same story that you have to be going 12+ mph to get rung up for a ticket. So excuse me if I don't feel particularly sorry for someone getting rung up for a $65+ speeding ticket because they just felt like they had to go 48 mph in a 35 mph zone - and this is coming from a guy who has had to deal with the tickets his wife rung up for 3 times in the last 4 years...

Chuck Lidell: I paint my toenails with pink and black polish. Problem is, I get more paint on my toes and on the carpet than on my nails. Any advice?
Maria Sharapova: Don't you beat up other guys for a living? I don't know how to answer this.

This is fine but what happens when the department can't make enough money off 12+ over. Are you fine with them moving it to 7mph over? How about 5mph over? How about 3mph? Are they going to tell us when they make these adjustments?

Also, most of the speed cameras are on interstates where there is very little correlation between speed and accidents.

Tell me the last time you've seen an accident on 235 that had to do with speeding rather than drunk driving, weather, or dumb ***** not paying attention?

or additionally... maybe instead of ringing all these people up, its time to examine whether the speed limits should really be where theyre at, or raised.

That's one of jan michelson's pet topics. If you go out west on Ashworth Road past jordan creek pkwy, it's a ticket bonanza when the cops go through there because there's not a lot of housing, no stops, and it's 35 with everyone going at least 45.

It's a money grab nothing more nothing less. They are flat out lying on the public safety thing.

I use that road quie a bit and I find myself speeding almost all of the time. The fact of the matter is just because the speed limit "should" be higher doesnt mean that it is OK to speed. The law is what it is and just because we dont like it doesn mean it is a "money grab".

“It’s beyond pride. It’s a restored trust. There’s a confidence again, a passion that teeters on swagger. More than anything, (Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads) has restored the Iowa State “it” factor, the steadfast belief that it is great to be a Cyclone...the man’s enthusiasm is genuine to the core...”

Actually it's more devious than that, by systematically creating laws which most of the population breaks at some point or another, you generate the ability to always have "reasonable cause" for search and seizure.

i still think if they want to prove it's not about the money, they should donate the proceeds to charity
