    NFL:Singletary Fired

The Niner's fired Singletary tonight. I never really thought he had a fair shot. The York's would go get him a QB to at least attempt to help him.

Let the speculation begin. Here's my guess:

Harbaugh leaves Stanford and possibly spurns Michigan to go to San Fran and within the deal they promise to find a way to get Andrew Luck.

If that doesn't happen, please, please let it be Cowher or Gruden. Please.

I really felt that Singletary should've been fired at the bye week too!

Jim Tomsula takes over as interim head coach.
Tomsula is the defensive line coach.

I also wonder if Gruden or Cowher might be interested in the 49ers.

Gruden is enjoying his career as a (terrible) Color Commentator for MNF. Cowher's list has already been named, by him, to be the Giatns, the Texans, and the Dolphins. I believe we will see him in New York next year after the Packers took the G-Men out back and gave them a country whipping.

I'm not surprised Singletary was fired, I'm just surprised at the timing. I expected much earlier (the game before the bye week) or at the conclusion of the season.

Now...this opens the door for the scenario I predicted a few weeks ago. I actually predicted it to happen a couple years down the line but so be it.

IF Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh changes jobs, I do not believe it will be to another college. There is talk that he will replace Rich Rodriguez at Michigan next season. Howeverr, Harbaugh has already made Stanford into a solid 8-10 win team. I believe Michigan is a go-nowhere job for him because, as far as building a team up, he has nothing left to prove: he can do it. Now he needs to get them over the hump and into the echelon of elite teams.

So, IF (that's a big IF) Jim Harbaugh decides to leave Stanford, I fully believe it will be for the 49ers head coaching job, and I believe he will take it before the deadline for players to declare for the NFL Draft so that his QB, Andrew Luck, can become eligible for the draft, they will reunite in San Fran and continue to be an 8-win team for years to come.

Not to knock on Harbaugh and Luck...they are GREAT people, and great at what they do. But the Niners as an organization are doomed for a while to come.

Actually, wait, this will all happen in 2012 when the Vikings move to Los Angeles...

That's kind of how I feel about it as well. On top of that, the 49ers are a team that is deficient in talent in some key areas, particularly QB, and was injured this year in areas where they did have talent. If your choice in QB is between Alex Smith or Troy Smith, your team had better have an outstanding running game (which it did, until Gore got hurt) and an outstanding defense (which it doesn't have).

Perhaps Singletary isn't head coaching material. I just don't think that can be determined in three partial seasons. Singletary got sacked because the GM didn't know how to do his job.

As far as what kind of coach they're going to be able to hire, I think you can forget about "name brand" coaches in this case. They have a horrible stadium that desperately needs replacing, (according to Mike & Mike) not a whole lot of money, deficient talent in key areas, and now ownership that has shown they'll fire the coach if he can't win with the "talent" given to him. I just can't see the 49ers as a "desirable" job at the moment.

I wouldn't mind that. But give me a proven coach. No more coordinators (Nolan), college guys (Erickson), or guys with no experience (Singletary). I want Gruden, Cowher, heck even Billick. I just want someone who knows what they are doing. Tired of them messing around.

    Re: Mike Singletary fired!

The 49ers were once a great dynasty. Then, they began selling off any marketable players in order to cut costs (Montana, Owens, Garcia, Rice). Now they are a poorly managed corporation selling an inferior product. The head coaching job at SF is a no-win situation. What the NFL doesn't realize is that they are competing (and losing) against the NCAA for the hearts and souls of football fans and coaches. Harbaugh, Ferentz, Stoops, Meyer will never be NFL coaches.

This is the NFL, if they give you more than a year you're lucky. I think Singletary might've gotten longer if he wasn't such an abrasive headcase. From his in your face bible thumping (reminded me of how Chizik hid behind his religion while he was here) to his terrible media relations, he was just not head coach material. I can't believe he wasn't fired earlier.

I meant personnel wise. One could argue the biggest move they ever made was to go get Ted Ginn or Nate Clements. Are those seriously big moves? I mean come on. They never made moves in the draft to get a QB and when some decent options were out there (McNabb), they never tried to get them.
