**Official New Years Eve Eve/Eve/Day Winter Storm Thread

So on some weather websites there is major rumblings of a gigantic winter storm/blizzard coming in our general direction- the reason I say "general" direction is because the storm is a week away and that is a long time out for weather models to be nailing down an exact track, let alone there be a storm still be in play in 6-7 days. I just want people to be aware that there is something out there that could impact the region severely in a time range that there will be a lot of traveling going on.

Many of the weather models are moving the system in a very similar pattern as the Christmas storm last year where the west and northwest portions of the state will get an epic blizzard and the east and southeast parts of the state will get mostly all rain.

Way too early to for this...

A storm will be somewhere in the middle part of the country around New Years. Yes models have it as a beast, but that's pretty typical. It'll tone down a bit.

I'll check back in a few days and give you my thinking then.

Wouldn't shock me if we had a beast but your correct, give it 2-3 days so the big system can clear the east coast and we should have a better handle. In addition, 7 ish days out track can vary widely the National Weather Service Text Product Display put it best:
    THIS IS ONE
OF THOSE SYSTEMS THAT WILL HAVE A FULL FLEDGED BLIZZARD AND HEAVY
SNOW ON THE NORTHWEST SIDE OF IT AND TEMPERATURES AND DEWPOINTS
RISING INTO THE 40S AND 50S WITH THUNDERSTORMS. THE EXACT TRACK OF
THIS SYSTEM WILL DECIDE IF THE FORECAST AREA HAS ONE OR THE OTHER OR
    ALL OF THE ABOVE.

Well, here's to hoping that Northeast Iowa gets the crappy side of that one.

Yes, I have to agree. I can't help believe that predicting the weather 7 days out is like throwing darts. As mild as the temps will be, it may be a little on the wet side. imo

We will not know with any certainty what will happen until Wednesday.

Yesterday morning, I am going to see snow from this storm. This morning, the storm will bring me rain and freezing rain, with temps in the upper 30's.

Maybe I am not supposed to see any WBB in person this year.

Channel 13 made it sound like 47 degrees on Thursday and rain. Megan made it sound like all the snow was going to stay north of us

I'd give that result the edge in terms of chance to happen there is still a huge degree of uncertainty, it wouldn't take too significant of shift to the east to make this a snow producer for at least the western half of Iowa.
