Cedar Rapids Gazette: Media coverage rant...

I read the Gazette sports section today (but never pay for it) and read an article that Jeff Johnson wrote to cover the Cyclones media day. The theme of the article was to point out all of the learning we are doing this year but never mentioned Blythe....

He also decided to use two pictures that are behind the scenes pictures of media day. One with players in football pants with dress shirts and a tie getting ready for head-shots.....weird. And the other a picture of the Cyclone team laying around and with Anthony Green laying flat on his back in the foreground as they wait.

Terrible coverage if you ask me. But as Jeff Johnson wrote me back when I complained about his writing skills (or lack there of) "It's my Hawkeye paranoia."

I live in DM and subscribe to the Register but like to see how the Gazette covers the Clones online as well. Read them both amigos, Jeff Johnson has some good stuff on Ben Lamaak and Wayne Bolt and the Register sent the A team sending Sean Keller and Andrew Logue and they did a nice job. Funny but you had to read the Ames Tribune online to know that Todd Blyth was at a wedding Saturday and missed the Media day. I'm not worried about him though, something tells me we will see plenty of quotes from Todd as the season wears on.

You may be upset because you know the Hawks will get twice the coverage Tuesday and you will be right. Until we become a consistant top 25 team the Hawks will always get the love. No, I do not think the Hawks are a consistant top 25 team but for some reason they bamboozle everyone into thinking they are as evidenced by the first AP poll showing them getting votes.

Come on Gene, take us to the promised land!

Re: Cedar Rapids Gazette: Media coverage rant...

Blythe was not at media day yesterday, as we were told he was at a friend's wedding.

Media day was held inside the Bergstrom facility, due to weather. There was a lot of laying around by the players, who were probably in between their morning practice and their afternoon practice, and that's what football players do...lay around and sleep between two a days if they can.

Being that it was indoors, and the guys were all gathered more closely together, there didn't seem to be the normal photo ops that normally go along with media day, that are staged and stuff like that.

And the players were around for maybe an hour, tops. i was surprised at how quickly they all ducked out, but for the most part, there were like 8 to 10 players being talked to, and everyone else was just bored out of their mind, or they were spending time with special olympians.

That sheds some light on it for sure, but other papers seemed to cover it pretty fairly. Can't expect too much from an eastern Iowa paper I know.

Kind of surprises me that one of the top returning players was allowed to miss media day.

If a record of 71 wins and 51 losses over the last 10 years is worthy of being a top 25 program you would be right. That is an average record of 7 and 5 over the last decade ending in 06. If you are quoting some scientific poll then I stand corrected. If it is a subjective poll taken by a bunch of Big 10 homers that see the Big 10 on national tv each weekend and believe the best football is always on tv then I say it's bogus.

Last year all the tv watchers were convinced the two best teams in the country were from the Big 10, they were on national tv each weekend right? Well Florida and USC showed the country just because your game are televised on ABC each weekend doesn't mean your conference is the best. For those of you that forget, USC 32 Michigan 18 --Florida 41 Ohio State 14.

Best way to handle that dribble is to kick the Hawks arse this year. Nothing else will do any good.

Re: Cedar Rapids Gazette: Media coverage rant...

I think the 3 consecutive #8 finishes at the end of the year helped them. If you were reviewing how teams ended up for the last 10 years and you saw Iowa finish in the top-10 3 years in a row, that might influence you a touch.

Ohio State, Michigan, Texas, Oklahoma, USC, LSU, Florida and Miami are always going to be ranked in or near the top-10 starting the season. It's usually assumed they'll be great and they usually are. Someone has to lose when these teams play each other.

I just keep laughing at the Big 10 when they put their teams at such a disadvantage by making them have huge layoffs. It might help in the lesser bowl games as you'd get more time to prep (see Iowa vs Texas), but I think it hurts the teams in the BCS games as they were obviously already rolling.

Re: Cedar Rapids Gazette: Media coverage rant...

    Iowa 10 year record:

    1997 7-5 1998 3-8 1999 1-10 2000 3-9 2001 7-5 2002 11-2 2003 10-3 2004 10-2 2005 7-5 2006 6-7

The Big 10 homers must only look at Iowa during the 3 year spread finishing #8 and not the 4 years they had losing records. Ohh but remember, the Big 10 has a network (ABC) that crowds out the Texas teams in Dallas, the Florida teams in Miami, the California teams in L.A and so on. So that proves it, if you are on tv, you are the best even if Florida and USC run circles around your best teams.

The best paper to read about ISU football is the Omaha paper. They do in depth articles on coaches and players... and seem to have an unslanted view of the Cyclones.

I lived in CR for 25+ years and the Hawks never lost a game during that time, they just didn't win. ISU coverage in the Gazette is horrible/pathetic.

Blythe had a good reason to miss media day, it was not just a friend's wedding, it was his sister's wedding. Chizik is a big family man and I don't think he would have any problem with Blythe missing media day for a special family event like this.
