Anyone ever smoked a prime rib?

I am smoking a 14 lb prime rib on my Big Green EGG smoker Friday and was wondering if anyone else has ever smoked one. If you have, any suggestions would be great!

I worked at a restaurant in high school and people always wondered what our seasoning was on the prime rib. It was Lawrys, coarse black pepper, garlic salt, and parsley.

I have a Weber bullet smoker and use this website a lot. Check out a link for their prime rib recipe:

Correct, however, it was the parents idea, so they picked up the tab.

I think I have the basics down

    1. cook over indirect heat at around 225 degrees
    2. cook about 25 min/lb until internal temp is around 125 degrees
    3. pull off, wrap in foil and it will continue cooking for about 10 min and it should be a perfect med rare

I wouldnt try it. There are plenty good recipes for the oven, maybe smoke it for an hour or two for a lil flavor. Had a buddy do it, he regrets it since it was so expensive.

Re: Anyone ever smoked a prime rib?

Ripvdub has good advice. A couple hours in the smoker then to the oven. Maybe even three hours.

Re: Anyone ever smoked a prime rib?

I have smoked a prime rib on a Weber once a month for about a year, Have one in the fridge ready to go. (not 14 pounds worth)

Nothing wrong with indirect heat and smoke. It is a different taste since you will end up with about an inch of smoke ring around the meat. Make a sauce that you like and drizzle on the sliced meat.

I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone.

Put it in a roasting pan to catch the juices for your au jus.

    Use a light smoke.

Re: Anyone ever smoked a prime rib?

I did one last week 13lbs, started at 5am at 225 and pulled it off around 10am internal temp was 133 degrees. I let it rest ~11:30 had to warm up the out side for about 10 min, let stand for another 5 sliced into it at 139 degrees medium rare, it was a very enjoyable eating experience. If I had it to do over I might start at 6am and pull it around 10:30 or 11 just let the internal temp tell you. I'd stick with 135-145 for medium rare anything over that just put bbq on your boot and enjoy it.

Let me clarify myself. I will be cooking with indirect heat on the smoker, I actually wont be using any woodchips for the smoking flavor.

Re: Anyone ever smoked a prime rib?

Ordinarily, I am all for grilling and/or smoking meat. I have smoked 1000s of pounds of meat over time. I would not put a prime rib in the smoker. This is such a fantasic piece of meat and risking it...well it's too risky
