    Anyone ever smoked a prime rib?

    I am smoking a 14 lb prime rib on my Big Green EGG smoker Friday and was wondering if anyone else has ever smoked one. If you have, any suggestions would be great!

    I worked at a restaurant in high school and people always wondered what our seasoning was on the prime rib. It was Lawrys, coarse black pepper, garlic salt, and parsley.

    Correct, however, it was the parents idea, so they picked up the tab.

    I think I have the basics down

    1. cook over indirect heat at around 225 degrees
    2. cook about 25 min/lb until internal temp is around 125 degrees
    3. pull off, wrap in foil and it will continue cooking for about 10 min and it should be a perfect med rare

    I wouldnt try it. There are plenty good recipes for the oven, maybe smoke it for an hour or two for a lil flavor. Had a buddy do it, he regrets it since it was so expensive.

    Ripvdub has good advice. A couple hours in the smoker then to the oven. Maybe even three hours.

    I have smoked a prime rib on a Weber once a month for about a year, Have one in the fridge ready to go. (not 14 pounds worth)

    Nothing wrong with indirect heat and smoke. It is a different taste since you will end up with about an inch of smoke ring around the meat. Make a sauce that you like and drizzle on the sliced meat.

    Put it in a roasting pan to catch the juices for your au jus.

    Use a light smoke.

    I did one last week 13lbs, started at 5am at 225 and pulled it off around 10am internal temp was 133 degrees. I let it rest ~11:30 had to warm up the out side for about 10 min, let stand for another 5 sliced into it at 139 degrees medium rare, it was a very enjoyable eating experience. If I had it to do over I might start at 6am and pull it around 10:30 or 11 just let the internal temp tell you. I'd stick with 135-145 for medium rare anything over that just put bbq on your boot and enjoy it.

    Let me clarify myself. I will be cooking with indirect heat on the smoker, I actually wont be using any woodchips for the smoking flavor.

    Ordinarily, I am all for grilling and/or smoking meat. I have smoked 1000s of pounds of meat over time. I would not put a prime rib in the smoker. This is such a fantasic piece of meat and risking it...well it's too risky
