Small conference schools play big conference schools in non con because they dont have good schools to play in conference.

Big conference schools play small conference schools in non con because they dont have bad schools to play in conference.

    That explains the #8 SOS.

Michigan beating Boston College should be a boost for our RPI.

Boston College Eagles vs. Michigan Wolverines - Recap - December 22, 2010 - ESPN

Perhaps Michigan wasn't as low quality of an opponent as some suggested.

On the flip side, Michigan had just lost badly to lowly Detroit, at Ann Arbor, by 19 last Saturday. Maybe those two games even out.

I did watch most of the Michigan-BC game. The Wolverines looked good.

Re: New RPI rankings for Big 12

Ok I checked the data in today's Real Time RPI. Michigan's victory over previously undefeated Boston College vaulted them from #64 RPI to #44 and their SOS went from #15 to #8.

After Michigan's win, Iowa State's SOS only improved from #108 to #100, and actually we dropped four RPI spots from #44 to #48. We were hurt by Virginia's loss to #98 James Madison and TCU's loss to #58 Georgia.

I know I know, we should wait til midway through the Big 12 season to really worry about this stuff, but I'm a numbers geek so it's fun!

Re: New RPI rankings for Big 12

I actually am concerned, the Big 12 RPI usually is a boost to us; but other programs haven't had the non-con success they usually do - OU.

Actually, having watched many of the Big 12 teams this year, here's my 3 early takes on the Big 12.

Texas Tech makes the tourney this year.

2 ISU wins the north, and finishes 3rd in Big 12 - am I being optimistic, not really. Honestly, we should win the North, PERIOD. This is a down year for the Big 12, and I see the South once again beating each other up. Other than A&M and Baylor, I really don't see any teams that we shouldn't be able to compete with eye to eye. I actually think we could beat Baylor, but not on their Big 12 opening day at Waco. We got tons of press and positive exposure from beating Baylor last year on TV, let's hope we make a good showing this time. But Mulkey has a memory like an elephant and will want revenge for last years beat down. A&M is at home for us, so that could be our "upset" of the year if the posts play hard and the 3s fall, but I think it will be hard for our guards to handle their ball pressure.

3 ISU once again excites fans at Hilton South, and makes it to the semis, and upsets Baylor to play A&M in the finals and loses in a close rematch. Let's hope for 2 or 4th place in Big 12.

Okay Tornado Man, let me have it. :-)

Re: New RPI rankings for Big 12

Hi Twistedredbird! I agree with everything you said above 100%! And you're exactly right about the lower RPI hurting us come conference season. Last year there were 7 teams ranked in the Top 25 heading into conf play and this year only 4. I predict this will mean that Texas Tech makes the NCAA tournament along with ISU, TAMU, Baylor, OU, and *maybe* Texas, but nobody else from the North division (unless the Kansas schools pull some surprises). Nebbie, CO and Mizzou just plain suck. OU is ranked about 30 spots too high in my opinion, I've seen them play and it's not always pretty (but then neither is ISU at times - Sherri Coale will get her team ready).

I will make some predictions of my own since you started the trend:

Baylor will probably have one "shocker" loss during the season (including to ISU as you note above, or maybe on the road at Colorado if Brittney Griner has the flu), but will still probably make the National Championship game and get a rematch against UConn.

A&M will probably make its first Final Four but lose there.

OU will lose in the second round to a mid-major sleeper like Middle Tennessee State.

TTech will be happy to make the tourney and lose in the first round. (Still as you and others have pointed out on this board, it's good for our conference to have TTech be strong again).

ISU will squeak by with a 5-seed and get to the Sweet 16 by upsetting a 4-seed like Florida State or Notre Dame, but then lose to a 1-seed like Duke.

Ok enough of my prognosticating. Merry Christmas everyone.

Just so Rocky Griner doesn't start throwing punches. I think I hate Baylor as much as KU in MBB.

Re: New RPI rankings for Big 12

Woo Hoo!! Big12/10 slipped past little10/11/12 to take over at #1..6017 to /6007. ISU continues to slide to #49 on the basis of slipping SOS - down to 110. Chicago State at 248 won't help. North Dakota State is a respectable 100 - that will help. If the conference can hold on until conference play, we'll be good for the year. Conference RPI doesn't change much after that. Bill hinted that he expected BU to be ranked #1 when we play them. Maybe so, and our rpi will get an up arrow or two no matter the outcome.

ISU up to 40. Michigan's win over OSU has given us a top 25 win. Some poopooed Michigan, but they are looking like a good team to me, and a great non-con win for us come selection time if they continue.

Re: New RPI rankings for Big 12

BigXII finally moves into #1 in both Collegerpi and Realtimerpi. Our individual standing hasn't moved yet, but, it might tomorrow. The OU loss to TCU doesn't help the conference, but, it might help our standing. The Michigan win over Iowa may not move rpi much, but, it will give voters and the selection committee something to ponder.
