Dayton extends a hand for Vikings stadium

Good article in the Star Tribune today about new stadium talks......

Dayton extends a hand for Vikings stadium | StarTribune.com

It sounds like the public will need to step up to the plate on this one, but I think that will far outweigh losing the team IMO.

Edit: Here's another article on the planning & who's involved....

I like that the owner expects the state to build this but still has his own demands on what has to be built.

I've always assumed that the one asking for the handout really isn't in a position to demand how that handout is given to them.

The owner has offered to pay for a huge chunk of it.

I think Wilf has unofficially offered to pay for about 1/3 of it, but I could be wrong. Regardless, that still leaves the public & private donations to come up with $400 mill at a minimum (assuming the stadium will cost b/n $600-900 mill).

Hopefully the legislature can put together some good options this time around.

He has offered to pay over $300 Million dollars of his own money for it. I believe he deserves the right to have a say in the design. That being said I think it would be dumb to not have a fixed roof because it would rule out the possibility of the stadium being used as a venue for other events.

I can't see the legislature not passing a bill after this whole debacle with the dome and the pressure from LA to get a NFL team.

I think a dome with an inflatable roof would be cool.

Yes, when you read something like this:

"Meanwhile, Zygi Wilf reiterated Monday that he is opposed to a stadium with a roof of any kind, including a retractable one. 'Football should be played outdoors,' Wilf said."

Maybe it's just me, but the only way I'd vote for something like this is if it included a roof, and could be used for events other than football all year round.

Re: Dayton extends a hand for Vikings stadium

Given that they're in Minnesota, a roof of some sort seems non-negotiable.

I agree to a certain extent, but it also depends on where the stadium is located and how much extra $$ the roof would cost. For example, if they decide to build the new stadium in a suburb (Anoka has been mentioned - Northern burb), then it's possible the Metrodome will still be maintained and used for other indoor events. Obviously that can't happen if they rebuild the new stadium in the same location as the Metrodome, but the location is still being debated.

I'd rather have the Vikes play outdoors in Minnesota than play in LA

Re: Dayton extends a hand for Vikings stadium

Jerry's stadium ended up costing about $1.15 billion, and Arlington put up about $325 million. That was $325 million too much in IMO, but at least Jerry bore the majority of the costs, and not the public.

Agree completely. The only way to get a reasonable paypack is to run the stadium year round, and that's what Jerry does with his new stadium. Any non-FB winter events are most likely going to require heating, and many summer events will require AC. If Wilf likes outdoor FB, he can open the place up for Vikings games.

Jerry may actually be the model in terms of doing this reasonably. I still prefer this to be privately funded, but if the private party puts up the majority of the funding, that at least forces them to make a significant commitment.

I would assume that Jerry's personal stake in the stadium drives him to get the extra events, and he's doing a great job with that so far.

Re: Dayton extends a hand for Vikings stadium

The NFL needs to step in to these situations and tell owners that they bought a team in Minnesota and it needs to stay in Minnesota. Sick of these owners moving teams around. They are the Minnesota Viking and have been for 40 years. It's not like Jacksonville who have been there a very short time.
Wilf needs to suck it up and pay for it.

Re: Dayton extends a hand for Vikings stadium

Hmmm. The rich guy would pay about 1/3rd of the cost of the stadium and the taxpayers 2/3rds. Even so, the state would be smart to build it as long as the stadium is multi-purpose.
