Bowling in the Endzone . . . question about insourcing.

Can (or Is . . . or Should) ISU use its own Engineer/Architecture Departments to reduce costs???

I don't think they can use their own departments in that way. I'm pretty sure that any construction would need to be bid on since ISU is part of the state government.

And while we're at it we can use student's as cheap labor!

No and no. The students don't have the experience to be designing something like that and the professors don't have the time and not all of them have the experience either. This is coming from a CE grad.

Agronclone also has a good point. As part of the state government they are almost certainly required to bid out the design.

Makes sense to me. Then we can start rumors of how many students fell into the concrete and are forever part of the stadium.

This would also require quite a few PE stamps. Not sure how many folks at an educational institution would have those, as prof types generally don't have the experience component required to obtain them.

Actually the staff ISU has in their Civil and Construction departments is more than capable in designing this from ground up. They just are required to bid out the design by the Board of Regents.

Hmmm...Guess I was thinking of this with my "ME" glasses on. It would make more sense for the Civil guys to have more real-world experience (i.e. PE-worthy) in this kind of thing than other disciplines.

Also, I would think that the design phase would take quite a bit longer if the ISU folks were to do it simply because they've got other responsibilities besides the stadium.

Don't kid yourselves, this thing is already designed. RDG will design, Weitz will build. Yeah, RDG would have some work yet to do, but they have enough work put into it already that it wouldn't make sense to hand it off to someone else.

This. The campus arch/eng dept. (ISU employs architects and engineers for facility management, campus planning etc.) is too small to take on a JTS project and while we have plenty of professors who are PEs; a JTS project isn't in their job description. Factor in that for a state institution the project would have to be open to interviews and competitive bids; it couldn't be done on campus.

And, as a pro, I prefer it this way.

Actually I wouldn't be so sure about Weitz. With the work Mortenson has been doing on campus (Hach Hall, Getting Hilton Ready) and their unrivaled experience with stadiums I think they would be a better candidate. It also doesn't help Weitz didn't do too well when doing the East and West renovations.

Even the engineering buildings have been designed by outside firms. I don't know that anything has been designed by professors in the college for a long time.

Will never happen because of non-compete laws in the State. This is also why the Vet School can't offer cheap vet services to the public.
