One of those "we don't think you can get us over the hump" situations.

Re: why is friedgen being let go at maryland?

Maryland lost their offensive coordinator (their "head coach in waiting") to Vanderbilt. Friedgen's time has run its course at Maryland, sort of like McCarney at ISU, but also Friedgen is older and certainly not the healthiest of beings. They've struggled recently and rumor has it they're looking at Mike Leach now, and forcing Friedgen to retire will lead them to go after Leach.

The coach who went to Vandy took half of the coaching staff and was the main recruiter.

Re: why is friedgen being let go at maryland?

Seems like they could at least let him finish the last season and save themselves a couple million . . .

Now they'll have to pay him the 2 mil and pay Leach probably close to the same amount.

Huh, I had heard earlier this season that his job was safe. Like others have already said, it seems to be a McCarney-like situation, they just don't think he can get them over the hump.

My dad graduated with Ralph Freidgen at Maryland '71...
Freidgen went to 7 Bowls in 10 seasons, what hump are they talking about?

Re: why is friedgen being let go at maryland?

This was all reported yesterday in the Washington Post, not like Orangebloods is the some sort of leading edge news organization.

Maryland likely will ask football Coach Ralph Friedgen to take buyout, retire

OB certainly doesn't know DC, Maryland may be in a "big market" but Maryland football isn't big in Washington, DC. Its the Redskins, Redskins, Redskins, and then probably Virginia Tech.

Re: why is friedgen being let go at maryland?

Maryland has had a decline in season tickets for 5 consecutive years. that may be playing a factor. Its a Redskins/Ravens area that they are up against. Friedgen is in his 60's and lost a decent chunk of his staff to Vandy. That probably doesn't help.

Just guessing, but I'd say ACC championships/BCS appearances. Again, much the same as McCarney.
