    iPad a good family gift?

Thinking about getting the family an iPad for Christmas. Is this a good family gift? And no, I'm not going to pull a Homer Simpson and have my name engraved on it just in case! This is truly for the whole family. My kids are only 7 and 9 but they are pretty tech literate and they don't break stuff. What do you think?

I guess you will have a time board of whomever gets to use the ipad.

Seems like a strange family gift just because of the nature of the device. Though, I suppose if the whole family is tech savvy, it would be just like another computer or something. You can use it as an universal remote, use it for browsing, reading bed time stories, etc etc...

Re: iPad a good family gift?

We have an iphone and ipod touch which are basically scaled down versions of the ipad and we have a 3 and 5 year old. Everyone enjoys using them because of the limitless apps there are games and educational programs for kids, as well, not to mention the music and video.

I don't think it's a bad gift for the whole family just because it is so versatile.

The only thing that is really nice about the iphone and touch that the ipad is lacking is the camera and video functions.

I don't know what the kids ages are and what other devices you have but it might be a better deal to get a couple 4th gen ipod touches for the money???

I think he said 7 and 9. At that age, an ipod touch seems to be a bit much, but then again, when I was 7-9, I was overjoyed when I received my much wished for Legos and Micro Machines.

Times have changed greatly since when we were kids. It seems like a lot of 4 and 5 year olds have nintendo ds systems now and the ipod touch isn't much more when you consider ds games cost a lot more ($20-$30) than apps (free-$2). Plus the ipod touch has much more versatility and room for kids to grow into them as they get older. Although, something new will come out in a couple years and they will seem obsolete.

Good point on the nintendo ds. My 7 yr old asked for one but I talked her in to an ipad. I wasn't sold on them at first but I think they are a real versatile device.

I think it could be, given the general trend of these type of devices and future adoption. Be prepared for everyone to want their own at some point though!

I don't do signatures. Blondes, brunettes, and red heads are a different story.

When I was 5, I just wanted Transformers! When I was 7-9ish all I wanted were videogames such as Super Nintendo and Donkey Kong and my parents would never get them for me! Instead they would give them to my older brothers, I would be upset but it didn't matter since I got to play them anyway.

I was born in 1989 and am apart of the first generation of the digital/computer age and even I'm amazed at the gadgets kids are getting these days! Technology seems to be growing exponentially...

That is hilarious, because when I saw the thread title that is what I was thinking of.

Re: iPad a good family gift?

I think it's a great gift. When we have large family gatherings the kids are always wanting to play on the two iPads we have in the family (one is mine, one is my dads). We have loaded them with Dr. Suess books, disney books, preschool apps, and just fun games for them to play. The 5 and 3 year old will sit down and play together on one iPad.

Great device for a family, IMO.

It is a great idea as long as you set ground rules for who gets it when. It is great for trips since you can load it up with books, games, and movies and the battery seems like it lasts forever.
