Mark Cuban Looks to End the BCS

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban pursuing plan to implement college football playoff system - ESPN Dallas

Basically the billionaire Dallas Mavericks owner is looking to create a playoff system for NCAA Football. Probably because he never was able to actually buy that MLB team he wanted and has a couple hundred million and nothing to do with it (I wish I had that problem).

It'll be interesting to see if he can get support, especially from the president's and AD's who have all pretty much said they favor the BCS bowl system (well, minus the Boise president that is). He said he was going to try to go after major donors to convince them to cut off donations to their respective schools until they do decide to join his system. If that's the case this sounds just as bad as the BCS system.

This sounds more like Mark Cuban not getting any media attention and making something up so people pay attention to him. Hats off to him if he can do it, but I don't see this as something that actually will happen.

It's an interesting idea for sure. I don't like the idea of getting major donors to cut off donations to the schools until they agree the join. Donors should not be the ones making these types of decisions. Also, the article states hes looking at a 12 or 16 team playoff. In my opinion, if you want to keep the regular season meaningful, don't go beyond 8 teams. There is no way you can convince me that in any year more that 8 teams deserve a shot at the national championship.

And 64 (or 66, 68, whatever it is now) do in basketball?

16 gives the Cinderella stories a chance, and I'd give the #16 team a better chance to win than a 16 seed in basketball.

I agree, but the regular season of basketball doesn't really matter all that much, which is kinda my point. When was the last time you heard complaining about rankings in college basketball? You dont, because it doesn't really matter, every top 25 team will make the tournament.

I think they do. You have to be really concerned with certain, key games if you're anywhere near the cut-off line. Strength of schedule is also marginally more important than in football.

Seeding can also be important in basketball (you'd much rather be a #4 than a #7).

My only concern with a 16 team (or any playoff in general) is that the opportunity for a school like ISU to participate in a post season would be severely limited unless there was also a secondary post season structure (NIT-like, but not in a tournament setting, like bowls).

The unimportance of the regular season in basketball has NOTHING to do with the tournament, but more the number of games. If you played 25 football games the regular season would lose importance too. I really dont see a 16 team playoff having much effect on the regular season at all, you would still need to win your conference, meaning you cant have any hiccups three (see the Big 10 as an example) and you would still be fighting for a high seed. Five at large births wouldn't allow a whole lot of room for error, as it is now you may have TWO teams make the 16 team bracket with more than one loss..

what coach is going to want to play 3-4 extra post season games in football to win a championship? that just seems to hard on kids in my opinion.

In my opinion, if you lose 2 of your 12 regular season football games then you are NOT one of the best teams in the country. Sure, you can still be a very good football team. But if you lose 2 or more games, you didn't do enough in the regular season to prove to me that you deserve a shot a the national championship.

That all said above, I prefer a BCS to the namby pamby bowls. Have them both, but make the month of Decemeber a month to remmeebr with a BCS start.

Ask what his Maverick players think of him and then go ask what the Clippers players think of their owner and then get back to me.

He is one of the best owners in sports and does what it takes to put his team in a position to win. In regard to his antics, the minute you forget this is entertainment, you lose.

buying PS3's for the locker rooms and being buddies with players does not make you a great owner. It makes you a jersey chaser with money.
