ISU prof wants cross removed from chapel

'tiny little text etched into her neck it said "jesus lived and died for all your sins." she's got blue black ink and it's scratched into her lower back. it said: "damn right i'll rise again." yeah, damn right you'll rise again.'

Blumenfeld, from the way he teaches, tries to associate too much with promoting a religion or being non-secular. I've never been in the MU chapel, but is the cross a crucifixion cross? Are there other religious symbols in there as well?

He doesn't seem to understand that all he is going to do is inflame Christians into activists. It's too bad that professors don't have public conduct clauses. Not that it would help, as the 1st amendment expressely protects your right to be an idiot.

He doesn't care who he ticks off. From my experience in his classrom he is an angry gay Jew that wants everybody to be as miserable as he is. He was quoted a couple years ago saying that when you walk into the MU and they request that you remove your hat to show respect for our fallen soldiers he actually gets his hat out of his bag and puts it on because that offends him. What a waste of skin.

The article about him wanting all the Christmas decorations on campus removed is found here

My response editorial is found here

Im just glad I have Homan as my bodyguard, Eustachy joked. If I ever make it real big and get to drive a limo everyday, hell be driving it. I thought he came off the bench like somebody was stealing his cow or something.

Notice how he sent his letter of concern to the media BEFORE bringing the issue up with Geoffroy.

    This guy has no spine.

I liked your editorial. Too many folks allow themselves to be defined by what they are against rather than what they stand for. Last I noticed, in most of the parks where I have seen statues, there aren't many built for critics. I have no problem with someone being critical. Heck one aspect of our democracy is respecting the right...and even defending it...of a person who is shouting at the top of their lungs against the very thing they themselves hold dear.

He is bringing unnecessary negative attention to ISU. He is entitled to his opinion. Its his approach that is abysmal.

Exactly. Larry Eustachy had a god-given right to drink but when you start embarrassing the university, things change.

That whole hat story just pisses me off.

No, the cross is just a very plain, standard tan cross. I don't recall there being anything else in there, nor would I expect that there is (since Proudfoot's original idea was just a regular old chapel).

I've spent quiet time in there on a few occasions, and everytime except once, there were a couple Muslims in there doing their prayers. Most of the time, there was also either a Jew praying or a Buddhist meditating. It was very cool, having all of us doing our own thing so close together, and I've never, EVER heard anyone express concern regarding the cross. I'm quite sad that Blumenfeld's warmongering brought him to the Union, because the chapel was about the only place on campus that hardly anybody knew about; it was nice to be able to count on it to be mostly empty and very quiet.

This was a letter to the editor in Thursday's Iowa State Daily. I wrote out a 3-page response to the guy, and then my Firefox crashed and wiped the whole thing out. I'd spent nearly two hours crafting it, and was too frustrated to write it again. However, my point stands: the Union has more religious connections than just that cross, and every one of them has just as much- if not more- historical justification as religious.

Blumenfeld has completely crossed the line, and I'm going to be writing a letter to the CI department chair, the Dean of LAS, and Geoffroy. This is getting ridiculous. As bostinelosd said, it's fine if he has his opinion, but he is making Iowa State look horrible, and we should not stand for it.

    True and Valiant

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.

Re: ISU prof wants cross removed from chapel

Why did this guy take a job at Iowa State. IF he thinks everything is bad up there then why take the job. When I took my current job I did not go into it thinking off all the stuff I can change.

Also why does someone not just tell him it's not a cross and that it's just the letter "T" in lower case. Then ask if he wants all the letter's "I" "S" "U" removed everywhere on the campus also.

Re: ISU prof wants cross removed from chapel

What I really enjoyed about Iowa state was there wasn't a forced politically correct culture. Everyone was laid back and no one really got offended by each other. There was diversity but it was a real diversity, not a forced diversity. This blowhard prof is going to ruin that.

I'd hate to make it a Christian issue, as I think it's more of a common sense/spiritual issue. I could understand him being upset about a team chaplain for the football squad, but after learning of his other antics, it's clear that this guy has a problem with just about everything. Disrespecting the deceased soldiers that the MU is supposed to represent, complaining about a Christian symbol in the MU chapel (clearly, it holds ancient powers that convert people of every religion within the same room to Christianity), to demanding that Christmas decorations be taken down because it offends everyone who doesn't celebrate it. Time for this guy to either shut his trap or risk losing his job.
