    Burglaries in West Des Moines/Clive

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up that there have been a string of burglaries in Clive and West Des Moines. My parents house got hit yesterday evening and they were told by the police that they were the fourth house robbed yesterday alone. It sounds like the intruder(s) are mainly looking for cash, jewelry, and prescription medication - my parents were lucky in that aspect as the intruder made off with about 30 DVDs, some of broken jewelry that my mom and sister never wear and some bottles of Vitamin D and Fish Oil. One of the neighbors at different break-in gave the description that it was a white guy, mid-to-late 20s, driving an SUV - so just vague enough to describe a majority of posters on here

Just remember that burglaries and home invasions seem to increase around this time of year, so take the proper precautions to keep your home secure.

Re: Burglaries in West Des Moines/Clive

I read the newspaper everyday and usually catch the local news. I'm a bit perplexed.

How come ever petty crime incident on "Des Moines' northside" gets plenty of coverage, but you don't hear squat about big things like home break-ins that occur in the western suburbs?

I don't understand this and it does the city of Des Moines no favors as far as public perception.

Can you give an example, I don't read regularly but I do go to the crime report log sometimes for a chuckle.

What a sad sack. He has to steal fish oil and Vitamin D. If he is in his 20s and stealing for omega 3 oil, he is a sad sack. Hope they catch him.

Who reads/hears this stuff? The W DM Register blog? Yeah....I'd be interested to see the hits on that thing. I'd guess maybe a good half dozen on a good day?

My point was the main DM media seems to cover every little crime (and yes...the big ones) that occur in DM proper, but a series of break-in in the 'burbs seems to go unnoticed.

Oh I don't know maybe because the crime ratio is probably 10/1+ on that side of the city. Just a thought.

Based on what? Perception from the media? Real stats (if so....link please?) So far you've done nothing to prove your 10/1 ratio is anything more than perception. Maybe you're right, or maybe you're way off base (due to falling victim to the local media).

Where do you get your 10/1 ratio from?

I just threw the number out there, but it is common knowledge that there is less crime and it's safer West of 86th.

Where are your stats/links? You made the claim about media coverage with a couple anecdotes and then raise the bar on the other posters anecdotes.

Of course there is going to be more crime in Des Moines, there is more people than any single suburb. Des Moines has 200,000. So in order to compare, it has to be Des Moines and 200,000 suburbanites. The metro is up to 640,000 people now.

My point was on perception given media coverage I see while running and updating my website.

This was prompted by my surprise there were 4 house break-ins in the western burbs reported on CF and I hadn't heard anything about them yet it seems the media reports on every little (and big) thing that happens in DM proper and gets covered beyond niche Register blogs.

It is MY perception. I doubt anyone is keeping stats on CCG's perception of media coverage in the DM metro....so I have no links to provide. Doesn't mean I'm correct, just commenting and asking if others see this. Maybe the do, maybe they don't. No crime (sorry of the pun) in asking...is there?

Re: Burglaries in West Des Moines/Clive

    Des Moines-2008
    Violent Crimes 676/per 100K
    Property Crimes 5,093/per 100k

    WDM-2008
    Violent Crimes 235/per 100K
    Property Crimes 3,131/per 100k

    Urbandale -2008
    Violent Crimes 107/per 100K
    Property Crimes 1,723/per 100k

    Johnston-2008
    Violent Crimes 104/per 100K
    Property Crimes 1,486/per 100k

So you're roughly 5 times as likely to be involved in a violent crime in Des Moines as Urbandale or Johnston and over twice as likely to be involved in a property crime.

With those stats in mind, Des Moines' probably gets under covered.

Re: Burglaries in West Des Moines/Clive

I never hear anything about any petty crimes in regard to Des Moines or any of the suburbs. I think somebody is a little over sensitive. That said a co-worker's house got burgled a few days ago in Ankeny when her fiance was home taking a shower. Ballsy.
