    Marcus Paige tidbit/thought

Just a tiny tidbit on Linn-Mar junior Marcus Paige, who has been offered by North Carolina and UCLA this week alone.

I got a tip that Fred Hoiberg went to Paige's game last night. Linn-Mar defeated Cedar Falls 66-61.

My quick thoughts on this story...

    - I think that the only shot ISU has with Paige is if UNC and KU really try to squeeze him. Am I crazy to think that the reason UNC offered him this early was to put pressure on Houston prospect L.J. Rose (who they also recently offered) ? I'm just thinking out loud here but Rose is ranked higher than Paige just about anywhere you look. It's not a crazy theory. Paige has said numerous times that he plans on letting the recruiting process run its course and that he'll take visits next fall.

Probably some truth to it. I'm sure Roy is struggling with some recruits right now. Not saying he still won't get them but most of the time he gets them right away when he offers. With their struggles the last year and a half I am sure that has gotten a bit tougher.

What are the chances we get Paige to ISU? When was the last time we got a recruit from that side of the state?

Paige would thrive at ISU under Fred. Perfect fit.

It does say something that he turned down Iowa's likely offer to attend the ISU-Iowa game for going to UNC.

Overall Roy hasn't struggled recruiting, but he has struggled recruiting pg's the last couple years. He's missed on several big time pg's and the bad pg play has really hurt his team since Lawson left. I think he's learning from his mistakes and trying to load up on pgs, so I could see him taking both Paige and Rose if he can get them both.

His recruiting has been great, all I am saying is that I am sure his recent struggles on the court are hurting him on 2012 and 2013 kids. They will still get great players but I am guessing he is having to work a little harder for them

While you are right he would fit perfectly in at ISU, the same could be said about Iowa and many other programs that are recruiting him. As far as not going to the Iowa/ISU game "saying something" I think there you are probably wrong. He has been to Carver many times in the past and I am sure will be again. He had a chance to go to NC, that has nothing to do with his feelings about Iowa

With all due respect, that post sounds exactly like a billion posts we made around here regarding Harrison Barnes.

I don't know the kid personally, but I'm thinking it really does say a lot. My gut tells me that he's not real interested in staying home.

Since we are an elite team now, let's go get that One Cyclone Moment.

I'd be interested to know what the percentage of in-state kids targetted by a more succesful program in a similarly populated state is. Is it really the case that a more successful run would keep kids here, or are there just a lot of kids that would like to get further from home for college if it's feasible to do so?

The top programs get kids out of someone's backyard everytime - that's why they are who they are. Its a cutthroat business, almost every bigtime player at Duke, UNC, KU, etc left a home despite good options close to home.

I was there and we looked for Fred. I didn't see him so he must have had a disguise on. Ben Jacobsen was there and Fred never spoke to him, that's for sure.

Paige was unimpressive last night. I'll see him plenty this year though. He plays within the game 95% of the time and is smooth.

Seems like most of the really talented in-state players leave. Its almost a given anymore.
yeah, we got Hoiberg. And haulska (cant remember how touted he actually was), but most (Lafrentz, Collison, Hinrich, Barnes, etc) leave the state. Even Uthoff is leaving.
The talent just does not stay in our state. Maybe it sounds like a defeatist attitude, but i'm not expecting any of the upper-level talent in this state to stay.

at 7'1 would fit right into Fred's pressing and high tempo offense.

    Re: Marcus Paige tidbit/thought

I have more confidence in Fred closing the deal on a player like this than any other coach we have had since Floyd. Finishing this year with a respectable record and really making a push next year will be key. If that happens...holy crap, look out. Fred has everything a player would ever want in a coach so if the wins start to come, with his overall dreamy-ness, ISU could be poised for some seriously great things.
