Let's be honest, where was McCarney taking us?

Anytime DM's name is mentioned, the love Mac crowd crys foul. But I really wonder where we would be headed if we still had Mac.
    1. Weak strength program would have continued
    2. Recruiting program headed down fast
    3. Players guaranteed starting spots from the beginning of practice
    4. Soft defense
    5. Barney Cotton
    6. Barney Cotton
I'm not sure how to predict what our record would have been, but not pretty. Season ticket sales would be in the tank, that's a sure thing.

Jason Berryman could have saved Mac's job......but he ended up costing him his job, IMO.

I also think that Ryan Kock could have saved Mac's job last season, if the coaching staff would have let him.

Re: Let's be honest, where was McCarney taking us?

What possible reason is there for starting this topic? McCarney has been gone for a long time, and a new season is about to start. It's absurd that you would even pick a fight like this.

Mods, would it be unreasonable to lock this right now? We all know that it's just going to descend into more pointless bickering and name-calling, just like the other thousand topics before it have.

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.

Re: Let's be honest, where was McCarney taking us?

I'm sure McCarney would have had us back in a bowl game in 08, but we were never going to be more than a 5-7 win team with him for the reasons stated in the originial post. It became obvious to our AD and he was replaced. In a few years I think we're going to look back and laugh at how generic we were.

With that Eric Heft interview in KC and the KXNO stuff today, there was a lot of Mac luvin in the air today. I figured the topic would come up.

Um sorry about the strong over reaction - I just saw Shrek III and feel the need to take my rage out on something, and this topic seemed as good a thing as any

A kinder, gentler way of putting it would have been lets leave this 6' under where it belongs, and look forward to what is going to happen, vs what could have happened. Which would have been better? We'll never know. But there's no such thing as what could have been, so lets go with what will be

A bigger question is: "Where was Ken Tricky taking the basketball program?"

    Discuss.

Re: Let's be honest, where was McCarney taking us?

I agree with the Ketelman. As much as I liked Coach Mac, I don't think there is anyway he could of rebounded for a while after that disaster last year. I thought the team, especially the offense, had a lot of talent last year. And remember, toward the end of the year we hardly had any committs. A record like that would of made it really really tough for recruiting.

I'm just glad somebody finally brought this topic up to be discussed...I'm surprised I haven't seen anything else on it in the last few months...(please note sarcasm-some of you are much better than others at detecting this)

Just be open minded for those who may want to talk about it. If its something you care not to discuss, then dont post, thats the most simple solution I can give. But I do warn that lets not get into a bashing of a guy who really had great character and love for our program for 12 years.

Re: Let's be honest, where was McCarney taking us?

Mac made some bad choices for asst. coaches to replace some pretty good guys that left for greener pastures. His loyalty to guys that were just not very good was his undoing. The guy never stopped trying, never did anything to embarrass the program, and seemed to really love being in Ames. Last year you could tell he knew it was all over after the Iowa game. If he had a better OL/OC asst. and a couple decent DBs he would still be at ISU.

We all make mistakes. Time to move on.
